The Lady in the Lake
Calvin Chadwick is a wealthy industrialist, owner of Isodyne Energy, husband of Whitney Frost, and candidate for the United States Senate. Peggy investigates him after learning that Jane Scott worked at Isodyne and had a romantic relationship with him. Chadwick is attending a horse race at Santa Anita when Peggy approaches him undercover and questions him about Scott. He gets flustered and nervous when Jane Scott's name is brought to him.
Chadwick refuses to provide Peggy with a list of Isodyne employees because the company works on classified United States government contracts. He tells her that she will need proper clearance before he will allow her access to the facility.
