Colleen O'Brien works the night shift on a factory floor, a riveter in an economy tightening around women as the GIs come marching home. Ten girls were let go the day before, and she reads the writing on the wall with a wry sort of dread, joking about tuberculosis and rivet guns to keep the fear at arm's length. She shares a cramped apartment with Peggy Carter, the two of them trading the same bed on opposite clocks, and she cheerfully appoints herself meddler-in-chief of her roommate's love life. She lends Peggy a little something to catch a man's eye, needles her about the thin line between an independent woman and a spinster.
Sent home early with a fever, she waits up in the dark to hear how Peggy's evening went, proud of a friend she's sure has finally landed a good catch. She never gets the morning she asked for. A scarred, green-suited intruder hunting Peggy and the volatile little prize she carried home puts a bullet in Colleen while she rests. Peggy comes back into the room to find her gone.
