Colonel Ernst Mueller is a German officer imprisoned at Nuremberg and awaiting execution for Nazi war crimes. Roger Dooley travels to Germany specifically to question him about the Battle of Finow, where Soviet agents Leet Brannis and Sasha Demidov were believed to have died. Mueller faces execution but is offered a cyanide pill by Dooley as a means of avoiding a public hanging.
Mueller provides the crucial revelation that there was no actual battle at Finow. His unit arrived afterward and found the Russian soldiers massacred, with their bodies ripped apart by an unknown attacker. Mueller's testimony gives Dooley a massive new piece of the puzzle surrounding Brannis, Demidov and the larger conspiracy. He then takes the cyanide pill from Dooley unaware that he was, in fact, handed a breath mint.
