Smoke and Mirrors
Fred Wells is Peggy’s fiancé and the man with whom she has planned a conventional future. Peggy tells Michael that she declined the Special Operations Executive opportunity because it did not fit the life she and Fred had planned. During an engagement gathering, Fred is presented as a pleasant and respectable partner, and Peggy wants Michael’s approval of him. Michael, however, questions whether Fred is truly the love of Peggy’s life and whether marriage to him reflects what Peggy actually wants.
Ultimately, upon Michael's death, Peggy decides to take the offer of the SOE and leaves Fred.
