Milestone: Killed by someone in combat.
Michael Carter is Peggy’s older brother and the person who understands her lifelong desire for adventure. In childhood, he plays with Peggy and encourages her spirited imagination, although their mother repeatedly scolds Peggy for behaving in ways she considers unladylike. Michael participates in their games and treats Peggy as a capable partner rather than a girl who must be constantly corrected.
As an adult, Michael serves in the war and maintains contact with Peggy. He recommends her for the Special Operations Executive because he believes her skills and temperament make her suitable for field work. When Peggy reveals that she turned down the opportunity, Michael challenges her decision. He argues that she has always wanted a life of adventure and that she is allowing other people’s expectations to suppress that desire. He asks whether Fred is truly the love of her life and urges her to stop pretending to be someone she is not.
