Odin is the Allfather, king of Asgard and father to Thor and Loki. Long ages of rule have taught him that true kingship lies in avoiding battle rather than seeking it. He denies his headstrong elder son permission to ride out and prove himself, insisting that the son of Odin carries different responsibilities than a common warrior. He even admits to having arranged for the Einherjar to let the boy win his matches, unwilling to let the kingdom see its prince defeated. When Thor vanishes, Odin takes counsel from Algrim, who warns that sons kept too close are driven away, and resolves to let the boy face real consequences.
The choice costs him dearly. As Thor's forbidden quest ignites war with the Frost Giants, Odin rides out to treat with King Thrym and agrees to surrender the Sword of Surtur by sunrise to avert the slaughter. Before terms can be met, his trusted advisor Algrim turns the fire sword against him. The betrayal is vengeance for the Dark Elves that Odin failed to save, and it leaves the Allfather gravely wounded. He survives, and in the aftermath he and Thor reconcile. The father at last sees a man where he had insisted on seeing a boy, telling his son that the House of Odin has never stood on firmer ground.
