SNAFU
Ovechkin is a wounded Soviet soldier during the 1943 flashback involving Dr. Fennhoff. He is facing the amputation of his leg without anesthetic when Fennhoff is asked to use his psychological abilities to prevent him from experiencing the pain.
Fennhoff places Ovechkin into a vivid fantasy involving a peaceful game of chess and his mother. Ovechkin remains unaware of the surgical procedure while the medical staff amputates his leg.
