Wilfred "Freddy" Malick is a young man scraping by on the margins of a Depression-era city, an apparent nobody pulled off the streets into a bootlegger's orbit. He believes himself unimportant, and everyone around him agrees, which is precisely why the danger hunting him goes unnoticed. Entrusted with delivering a mysterious vial, he becomes the unwitting linchpin of the night, the one life that must survive for a dark dynasty to rise and, paradoxically, for the future's protectors to exist at all.

Freddy spends the night as the prize in a fight he barely understands, shuttled between protectors and assassins while insisting that the cargo he carries is nothing more than good liquor. To the agents shielding him he seems exactly what he claims to be, a harmless young man who has never raised a hand against anyone, which makes the question of his fate all the crueler. Yet beneath the meekness runs a hunger to climb out of the gutter he was born into, and it is that hunger, more than any malice, that bends him toward the darkness waiting to claim him.

When the hunters descend, Freddy seizes the hidden vial and a gun and breaks away to finish the delivery that will change the world. Koenig catches up and pleads with him to stop, certain the boy he knows could never pull the trigger on a friend. Freddy proves him wrong, putting a bullet in the man who tried to save him and telling Koenig he never knew him at all, before vanishing to hand off his cargo. The meek nobody is gone, and the seed of a monster has finally taken root.
