Dr. Alethea Faber is a physician operating out of a hospital in Queens, seemingly, the woman at the center of the mystery surrounding the city's powered men. Every one of the affected men passed through her care, treated at the veterans' hospital before their abilities emerged, and Robbie's investigation into their condition leads straight to her door.

When Robbie comes to confront her, she agrees to sit down with him. She grows defensive as he presses her on the four patients who developed powers only after her treatment, insisting there is a reason behind everything she does. While she is occupied with the reporter, Ben Reilly slips into her office upstairs and uncovers a hidden compartment of files on the powered men. She and her assistant Ogden return to catch him in the act, but Ben plays the part of a lost patient and escapes, though not before Ogden recognizes him as one of the soldiers who the POWs in France. Later that evening, in an attempt to flee the hospital for fear of what the reporter's article will do to them, Dr. Faber and Ogden are approached by Cat, who delivers what could be the answer to everything the pair has been searching for.

Milestone: Killed by Dirk Leyden

Dr. Alethea Faber moves to save her son by any means once Cat delivers Ben Reilly's identity to her. After Ogden brings Ben to plead for help and is refused, Faber has her son drug the detective and bring him to a secret laboratory, where she handcuffs him to a bed and tells him she means to run tests. She insists she is nothing like the scientists who wanted to make weapons of these men, that her purpose is the opposite, and reveals the truth driving her: Ogden is her son, aging to death from his mutation, and she will do whatever it takes to save him.

Her devotion curdles into something monstrous. When Ben's blood alone yields no answer, she resolves to harvest genetic material from his organs, taking him to a surgery room over his protests. Examining tissue from his liver, she finds a unique substance, mixed with the other mutants' blood, stabilize the mutation at last. She injects Ogden with the concoction and watches him return to his younger self, the cure she has chased finally in hand. The triumph is short-lived. As she prepares to flee the lab, Silvermane and his powered men descend to seize her work, and in the violence that follows, Faber is killed and her laboratory left to burn.
