Synopsis

With his bags packed and a new life waiting, Ben answers a knock to find Ogden, Dr. Faber's assistant, on his doorstep. Ogden confesses that he too was a prisoner in that German camp, one of the men Ben saved. That the same experiment which gave Ben his powers is now aging him to death by the year. He begs Ben to let Faber study him for a cure. Ben simply refuses. Even sharing the fact that he was The Spider openly. As Ogden goes to leave, he stabs Ben with a needle as they shake hands. Ben wakes strapped to a gurney in a hidden laboratory, where Faber tells him she is nothing like the men who tried to forge a weapon out of broken soldiers. She is a mother. Ogden is her son, and she will carve whatever she needs out of Ben to save him. She also tells him, without flinching, that it was Cat who gave him up.

As Faber draws his blood and harvests his tissue, Ben sinks into a churning fever of memory and nightmare, back to the days when his own body first turned against him and army doctors probed him like a specimen. Deep in his liver, Faber finds what she has chased all along: a substance that, when mixed with the dying veterans' blood, stabilizes the mutation and reverts it back to its original form. She injects Ogden, and her son sheds his stolen years in an instant. Their triumph curdles the moment Ogden grasps that his mother means to kill Ben to bury the evidence. He takes the gun to do it himself. Meanwhile, having freed himself via a well aimed shot from his web (following numerous attempts), Ben meets Ogden at the elevator and is given a second chance at life. Ogden, for all his mistakes, turns out to be a truly good man and, against his mother’s wishes, lets Ben go free. Unfortunately, before he is able to, Silvermane and his crew force their way in to seize Faber's work for themselves. Ogden heads back into danger to save his mother and sadly perishes due to the choice, leaving Ben holding a cure that could finally make him an ordinary man, if he is willing to stop being the Spider.

Comic Roots

Where the episode's people and places come from on the page.

Temptation to Walk Away

The chapter ends with Ben holding a cure that could strip his powers and hand him an ordinary life, the sharpest form yet of a question that has haunted Spider-Man since the beginning. The definitive comics version is "Spider-Man No More!" in The Amazing Spider-Man #50 (1967) by Stan Lee and John Romita Sr., where a weary Peter Parker dumps his costume in a trash can and tries to quit. The series hands that same exhausted longing to a man who has already spent years wishing the bite had never happened.

Reilly on the Dissection Table

There is a grim irony in watching this Ben Reilly strapped down while a scientist harvests his genetic material. In mainstream comics, the name Ben Reilly belongs to a clone grown from Peter Parker's harvested genetics by the obsessive geneticist Miles Warren, the Jackal, the engine of the sprawling Clone Saga. The series is unrelated in plot, but the image of a Ben Reilly reduced to genetic raw material lands as an accidental echo of the character's comics DNA.

The Snark File

Easter eggs, callbacks and technical tidbits.

A Horror Icon Stops in on The Spiderverse

Ogden is played by Andrew Robinson, long associated with genre and horror through roles such as the killer Scorpio in Dirty Harry and Larry in Hellraiser, casting that lands with extra weight in the show's body-horror chapter.

An Homage to The Scarlet Spider

Ben Reilly strapped to a lab table while his genetic material is extracted plays as a nod to the comics, where the original Ben Reilly is a clone built from stolen Parker genetics during the Clone Saga.
