Dr. Arnim Zola

Dr. Arnim Zola is the Swiss scientist serving as Johann Schmidt's chief researcher within Hydra. A nervous, bespectacled man of genius, he is the technical mind who harnesses the Tesseract's cosmic energy and channels it into Hydra's arsenal of advanced weapons. He works in Schmidt's shadow, brilliant but unsettled, aware that his master's ambitions have grown beyond anything the German high command intended.

His nerve fails where Schmidt's fanaticism does not. Captured by Allied forces after a raid on a Hydra train, Zola is interrogated by Colonel Phillips and, fearing death more than he fears the Red Skull, gives up the location of Schmidt's final base. His information sets up the assault that ends the war against Hydra, the scientist choosing his own survival over loyalty to the cause he served.

Arnim Zola appears after Johann Fennhoff has been imprisoned. He approaches Fennhoff and acknowledges that Fennhoff's plan has failed. Zola tells him that the failure does not prevent future plans and expresses interest in Fennhoff's work concerning the human mind.

Zola identifies Fennhoff as a specialist whose knowledge could be useful to Hydra. He proposes that the two men collaborate and tells Fennhoff that an American prison provides opportunities despite his imprisonment.
