Captain America
Captain America: The First Avenger
Hello and welcome, fellow Marvel fans, to the
Snark Industries podcast. I'm John. And I'm Remy.
And we invite you to join us as we work our way
through every Marvel TV show, movie, and crossover.
Meaning if there's a Marvel character on screen,
it's fair game. All categorized in the temporal
order of their setting. By the time we're done,
we'll have built a complete start -to -finish
timeline of the entire Marvel Cinematic Universe.
To accomplish this goal, and to have a bit of
fun along the way, each episode will be split
into two parts. A watch party, and a deep dive.
If you're hearing this, you found one of our
watch parties. This is where we sit down with
you and experience a piece of Marvel media together
in real time, celebrating the high points and
poking fun at the low ones, because that's what
heroes do. To get synced up, here's what you'll
need to do. Pull up the movie or episode on your
screen and pause it right as the Marvel logo
is prominently displayed. Then come back here
and wait for the three -tone countdown. On the
third tone, press play, and just like that, we'll
be watching together. Quick note, if your version
includes ads, you'll need to pause us during
those breaks to stay in sync. Once you finish
watching along, we encourage everyone to check
out the deep dive as well, where we will do an
in -depth analysis of the information we just
consumed. Most importantly, we want to thank
each and every one of you for joining us on this
incredible journey. We're not affiliated with
Marvel in any way, shape, or form. We're just
fans who are passionate about these stories and
these characters and wish to share them with
everyone in a new and exciting way. So, sit back,
relax, and enjoy this episode of Snark Industries.
It's windy. All right, Captain America. The first
Avenger. Dude, I'm so excited about this movie.
This is one of my favorites. Headlights in the
fog. Unrelated, my retinas are now burned. God,
I haven't seen this in. I honestly don't remember
the last time I saw this movie. It has been a
little while. Oh, this man's got the jokes with
his little pole. Yeah, that's the normal BS.
Found it. So technically, we should be watching
this scene sometime in the future and then pick
back up. Yeah, you know, there was there was
a small part of me that wanted to go back and
actually edit these things in order, but then
no one could watch it with us. So now the sacrifices
we make for continuity. Right. Oh, spunking.
I don't think that's what it's called when you're
going into a vessel. It is. Oh, okay. You know
this for sure. Bangles and spelunking are my
expertise. You deal with your stuff. All right.
All right. So it shall be. It held up remarkably
well for being just in the elements for slip
and slide. Well, I mean, in the ice, though,
nothing's actually moving. Once it's buried,
it's kind of just there, isn't it? I'm just thinking
about the weight on the top. I guess it is an
air vessel, so kind of meant to deal with some
pressure. Wait, what is that? Wait, is that Jeffrey
Wright? No, it's not. I thought that was the
Watcher for a second. That would be kind of a
cool plug. That would be cool. He's going to
want to see this. Tonsberg, Norway. Guy running.
What's happening in 1942? You're about to find
out. Oh, yeah, it's Filch. Forgot he was in this.
He plays the same character in everything. Crotchety
old guy. I mean, look at him. Dude, if Indiana
Jones were made when he was an actor, he would
have been the knight in the chamber. Oh, that
guy's dead. Whoopsies. You run something like
that through a wall, I don't think there's a
whoopsie involved. Hey, that symbol looks familiar.
Yeah, we just saw that. Like, bro, we're trying.
This stone is actually very heavy by design.
Man, there was a run there when this movie came
out that Hugo Weaving was like every single character
in every movie. Mr. Anderson. Mr. Anderson. Gandalf.
Not quite. Just direct quotes. Well, he says
that. Fair enough. Take my hat. Show off. That
should be at the bottom of a lake. Not that one.
Remarkably breakable cube of glass there. Yeah.
Give me the most fragile cube you can muster.
I'm going to bury it here as a decoy. Yeah. Yeah,
in reality, I think that would have chipped off
a corner and bounced a couple of times. Yggdrasil.
What is the Elvish word for friend? Hey, he said
it too. Jinx. That snake has a very pokeable
eye. Yeah. It's like that thing we were talking
about in cartoons where the one object that's
going to be interacted with is drawn a little
bit differently. Yep. It works that way here
as well. Yep. Uh -oh. Pam, thought we hid that
better. My super secret tree wall didn't do what
it was supposed to do. I like that the snake
is what hides it, too. Some pretty fun parallels
there. Face is sagging there, bro. Hey, there's
a little bit of red on that skull. Oh, that's
funny. I didn't notice that. I like how his paper
is like 10 times bigger than everyone else's.
You're the smallest guy. Take the biggest paper.
Make sure you can hide entirely behind this.
Damn. Don't you wink at me when you're breaking
my dreams? Damn. Help is on the way, dear. He
goes to the movie theater and watches this. Just
a pout. Even little Timmy. I'm doing my part.
But not you, Steve. You suck. The fact that they
would play this kind of stuff in front of cartoons.
Yeah. Man, I really thought the first time I
saw this movie, he was about to do something
with that trash can lid. Yeah, yeah. First drop.
Oh, yeah. The tush kick. Patent pending. Hey,
I know that name. The size difference they made
it look like is insane. Oh, I know. Imagine being
cast as the Captain America scrawny body double
for these shots. We need someone's body that
looks like they could never survive in this world.
Yeah, yeah. Who's in? Audition now. Also, we're
going to cover up your face with a different
person's face so that they're not going to know
it's you. Yeah, I was wondering about that when
there's like a really hideous character. Like,
what did the casting sheet look like for that?
And how do you feel about submitting your your
headshot? Wanted one morbidly obese person like
golly. We got the human torch cameo right there.
Well, cameo, I guess, is a weird word for the
Easter egg. Easter egg is a better word. Thank
you. But Bucky's pulling, pulling two bras. That's
that's the doctor's. It's Claire from Doctor
Who. Oh, the Richard Dawson treatment. The look
on her face is like, I'm not actually happy about
that. Right. That's why it's the Richard Dawson
treatment. No, those women looked happy either.
Fair enough. Gravitic reverse technology. Gravitic.
I like that word. Gravitas. Huh. How very Starkian.
Well, he's just getting started. Oh, I know.
That's the same exact vibes as the introduction
of the Cybertruck when they're like, this window
will never break. And they have the guy come
up on stage and bust the window out first try.
Hilarious. Oh, man. He's also got a very short
tie. Yeah, yeah, it's kind of a thing, isn't
it? Yeah. Tucci! Tell him, Cap. Yep. Luckily,
Erskine happened to be right there, right then.
Amen. Stranger things. The threads of fate. That's
right. No, he's gonna. That. Burn. His hat's
also kind of cocky to the side. Oh, it's Buck,
man. That's got to be. Short ties and cocky hats
to the side. Sure signs that you're living in
yesteryear. Cocky. I wonder if that's where the
word originates. You have your hat cocked to
the side. You know, I don't know. Perhaps. You
in trouble. Look at that. Look at that sign there.
It's illegal to falsify your enlistment. Oh,
he looks at it, too. Yeah, we all know. Bro.
He falsified. Yeah. How many times now? Let me
put my little shoes on. I mean, it's so awkward.
Just walk in there and say nothing. Like. They
have all of those things saved. I mean better
records than we have today. Yeah. You can squeeze
in places. That's right. Be like a ferret. Oh,
baby. Little did he know he just changed the
entire world. Or maybe you did know. All I want
to do is see Tommy Lee Jones say, how much is
the other guys paying for him to be on our side?
The cartoon. Oh, I got it. That was a fun little
Easter egg because that's how he's going to look
later. Yep. Brought the whole snake. You think
that's part of it, bro? They don't want to handle
it. I mean, he really, really does, though. It's
kind of his whole thing. Caution in the name
of science. Huh. Yeah, he's he's known for exercising
extreme caution in the name of science. Science,
I tell you. Yeah. I love how he keeps adjusting
his face. Such a fun character. Well, I would,
too, if I had like a face flap covering my skull.
Don't say face flap. That's horrible. And suddenly
he has speed powers, immortality, ability to
make portals. Oh, wait, no, that's just Gahori.
Now, remember, that's not continuous. Continuous.
Same stone, brother. Same stone. That's why I
don't like what if. Because what if says that
this thing is supposed to be at the bottom of
a lake in America somewhere. I know, I know.
No. Good one. There you go. Look on Steve's face.
I really like Tommy Lee Jones. Yeah, he's great.
You could shake that helmet will fall right off.
Yeah. I love how inept they made him. What a
dick. Yeah. Everyone's standing there watching,
too. Hit him with the ladies. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
It's like squirrels on a bird pole. A bird pole?
Yeah. You've never seen this before? I don't
know that I've ever heard the term bird pole.
Well, you're just not as cultured as I am. I
guess not. I wasn't done trying yet, coach. It's
so good. I did it. There you go. Oh, man. Man,
she hit him with the ladies, too. Yeah. like
a very specific rodent oh man it's making me
cry I love that she went for it as well. Yeah,
yeah, yeah. That really gives the whole Captain
Carter thing. Yeah, yeah. It really gives it
some backbone. I love it. He's like, well, shit.
The look on his face. Oh, man. Can't imagine
why. Man, that shirt should have had a big star
in the middle. That's not till later. I know,
but you know, foreshadowing. It's like the blood
on the skull. That's pointed. No, I mean, he's
talking history. Speaking weak and small, Steve,
look at yourself. He heard this story from the
conquistadors. Yeah, right. Who had a tough go
with some Native Americans one time. I mean,
he thought there's power inside the earth. You
got to remember, there's also a celestial living
in there, too. That's right. A lot of power in
the earth. They hadn't thought of that yet, though.
Mm hmm. Then they thought of it, left it for
like a decade. And then thought of it again.
Full circle. Oh, yeah. What is this thread we
need to tie? It is really impressive how clean
the special effects of putting his head on that
scrawny ass body are. I know. And then to take
it back off and put it on his own body later,
don't even see the stitches or anything. Just
pop it off. What year did this come out? 2011.
You're asking me questions that there's no way
I know the answer to. Well, I asked it, then
I realized I know exactly when it came out. Cause
as I mentioned earlier, this was mine and my
wife's first date. So that's when we got together.
So yeah, 2011. Why don't you turn that light
off? Because he's skull right now. He doesn't
want to show. What is he trying to hide? What's
going on? Nope. That poor artist. His big red
head. Hey, I take offense to that. Hey, you know
what? Maybe you have the red skull to blame for
people shitting on gingers. Gingerism. Yeah.
Perhaps. The original redhead. A victory. Well,
I got some bad news for you, brother. So dramatic.
Dramatic effect. The artist is like, dude, he's
been making me paint this disgusting thing. Show
us the art, damn it. It kills me that they don't
show us that canvas. There's going to be a dramatic
reveal for those that don't know what's coming.
Yeah, well, but still, come on. They're going
to touch butts later. No, no, there's a whole
lot of fallout because they don't touch butts.
Oh, they touch butts. We just have to wait for
a very long time before they do. Oh, yeah. You
know what? That's right. That's right. That's
right. And then he doesn't tell Falcon about
it. Yeah, she wants to touch his butt. She really
wants to touch his butt when he comes out of
that machine. I want to touch his butt when he
comes out of that machine. What if it was like
crazy stormy outside? And they came in. Somebody
would really know. It's like, well, yeah, obviously
I have an umbrella. No, it's not lady. What's
wrong with you? Man, they didn't even try to
make that bookcase look real. Those books were
like three inches thick. Three inches can go
a long way. Oh, it's him. Yeah, I'm looking forward
to watching the Agent Carter series again. You
know, I've not seen any of those, so those will
be first times for me. Oh, are you serious? Oh,
they were great. I'm glad to hear that. We will
experience it for the first time together, all
of you who be listening. Get naked. Your pants
will be fine because pants and marble always
size to fit. That's Banner. He'll tell you. Pants
technology. Yeah, they really they really go
all in on the pant technology. Other clothes.
They really do. Yeah. My sandwich. They're about
to, man. A super soldier sandwich. Super soldier
sandwich. That's how I'd like to take mine. Serum
sounds kind of scary. This whole process looks
terrifying. Yes. I got plastered last night.
Anyway, let's operate. It's like, wait, Stark,
last thing I saw you operate was unsuccessful.
Get out of here. See you when you're hot. Wow,
that's unnecessary. That was so unnecessary.
He didn't even try to talk into it first. I know.
Right on his nipples. We're all good. Paddle
should go. Oh my. Damn, they're putting a lot
in him. Guess I didn't realize. How crazy would
it be if he just dies here? Everybody's watching.
Like, oh, okay. Well, I guess let's go home.
Well, where's our next? Get that Blonsky kid.
Make sure you tell the lady up front you got
your umbrella or she'll shoot you. Pull the lever,
crunk. Wrong lever. Why couldn't that have already
been standing upright? Dramatic effect. Yeah.
Looks like an Iron Maiden. Kind of terrifying.
No, you're going to. Those pants are versatile.
They still fit you afterwards and they hold all
your liquids. Stark's the only one with the sunglasses.
Everybody else is just eating the eye damage.
Oh, no, that guy's got some. Yeah, it always
kills me in movies thinking about the actors
when they're filming outside and how they're
not able to wear sunglasses. Oh, I know. Like
that's got to be the worst part of being an actor.
What do you expect him to do? Say, I'm fine.
OK, well, I guess, yeah. All day, he should have
said, I can do this all day. I could do this
all day. Keep cranking it. I'm glad they planned
to go to 100%, but Hunter was still in the red
zone. I know, I was just thinking, why is it
red if that's the purpose? Show me what you got.
Now she's really ready to touch his butt. Not
yet. And everyone can see why. See, the belt
is still done perfectly. It's not a stretchy
belt. No, no. His pants perfectly fit. Always
double the size or more. Excuse me, sir. You
left your cigarette pouch. I love that she goes
to touch him. And the look on the nurse's face
behind him was pretty funny, too. She can't not
touch. Nice poll. That's a plug for you. Big
bada boom. I love how there's just one left.
Exactly one left. Very convenient. Nice shooting.
Yeah, now it's time to do stuff. Well, that's
what you get for leaving a 90 ,000 year old woman
in charge of security at the front door. Not
to mention, she obviously knew someone was coming,
man. Light it up when he's coming out the hallway.
Don't give him the opportunity to shoot you.
She should have been more ready than that. Yeah,
Tommy gun, drive by. Take two. Boom headshot
damn. She's good Like oh shit my legs work look
at that Luckily, they knew they have a just right
size T -shirt for him when he got out of there.
Well, I mean, always be prepared, right? Yeah.
What size will he be when he comes out of here?
I don't know. Bring two or three shirts just
to be safe. Yeah. See, they try to address it
a little bit. You see, the pants are actually
a little short. They look like floods, but they
still fit around the waist and in the thighs
and everything. Yeah, figure that out. Yeah.
He's like, damn, that serum really works. Yeah,
he's running down a car. A cephalopoid on foot.
Physics. Who needs them? Don't worry, I'm fine.
No seatbelt, we're good. That Luger's got infinity
bullets in it. Not reloaded once. Yeah, right.
I'm kind of wondering how many shots he's taken.
I'd love to go back and check, but I'm not gonna.
At least one more missed one. There it is. Right
when it matters. This is one of my favorite parts.
Kid gives just a big middle finger to the bad
guy. I don't know why he did this. Just go. Yeah,
he tossed me in the lake. I can swim. We're fine.
This is best case scenario. Yeah. I am Aquaman.
You've got to be kidding me right now. Yeah.
Underwater, able to punch strong enough to punch
through a submersible, which is built to withstand
pressure's window, is wild behavior. That's what
heroes do. Yeah. Whoopsies. Mm hmm. That's one
of those tropes, the cyanide tooth. Yeah, it's
crazy because, I mean, I've accidentally chewed
weird in my life. You know, if you're just sitting
there. Yeah. Having a strong bully and next thing
you know, you're dead. Yeah. Whoops. Whoa, I'm
jacked. Yeah, it's the first time he's like really
taken account. Why? Because your face is red?
What did you say? Yeah, when you're kind of railing
on someone like that and they say something like
that, I don't trust it. Yep, that's not the time
to follow. I'll tell you that. It's time to go
home. Yep. Live to fight another day, soldier.
Mm -hmm. Burn. What a couple of goobery looking
dudes. Yeah. He counts them out. I'm glad he
had to count to three as well. I know, right?
It's like when you're reading a book and it's
like, oh, there were four or five of them. It's
like, you can count to four or five. You don't
realize that thing, very gun -like, is just already
pointing at you and he's sitting there like talking
shit. Oh, I should have made an imprint of him.
Yeah. It's a silhouette of ash. Yeah, that'd
have been good. Oh, boy. I hate that salute.
It's so dumb. It's so dumb. Yeah, me too. It's
like, oh, oh, right. Yeah, that's right. I'm
supposed to say it. I didn't do the arm thing,
though. Sorry. Oh, man. You have no idea how
long. That's a good question. Oh, got him. I
don't have time to read. Those kids would be
very upset if they could read. What are you going
to do about it? Alamogordo. What a name. Dick.
That's rough. Carter's like, I think you're enough.
You're enough, Steve. Scalpel. Mystery man saves
child. We're talking to somebody and I just randomly
said a word to somebody like paper. And they
came up and showed like, what dick? Like, can
I see that paper? How about show them the paper?
Bing, bang, boom. I love it for this. He's got
the original suit. It's so good. And the right
shape shield. Yep. Love it. Oh, this baby. One
of those dancers actually looks like the gal
that got shot in the Agents of S .H .I .E .L
.D. episode. The one in the red dress. Well,
we know that's not true because she's already
dead. Did she die? Maybe not. I don't think she
died. And this is only a few years later. Well,
she's a bad guy. I don't think she's going to
be a go -go dancer for Captain America. You don't
know. She might have reformed. That's fair. I'm
going to crack me up when I'm looking this stuff
up to put it on the site if that's the same gal.
Make whole theories about her, why she's there.
What's going to actually happen is you're going
to realize you're just wrong. Oh, that's probably
exactly what's going to happen. I love it. Hitler
behind. Yeah, that'll show him. Goofy -ass smile
on his face. Those amphitheaters are full of
people going to see that. The 40s, man. What
else are you going to do? That's fair. I don't
care how strong you are. That's really difficult
to balance. Oh. Luckily, in a production like
that, it could just be wires helping him out.
Okay. Cool. Uh... Oh, man. Yeah. We don't see
that guy. You know, I don't think they will.
Well, not until he saves a whole bunch of people.
We never rediscover that Steve is actually a
pretty talented artist. Well, my hands are kind
of tied, but luckily I was brought out here randomly
to dance in front of the soldiers. Mm hmm. Fair,
fair. Spandex. Nothing but spandex. Well, that's
not good odds. Nope. How did he not know that?
I don't feel like anyone's sharing any kind of
information with him. Right. That feels like
something that's very simple that he could have
found out. Like, I'm going to go in front of
a bunch of troops. Who are they? Yeah. Yeah,
you're absolutely right. Weird. Got him. Hey,
you bet I do. She's like, oh, shit, my speech
worked. I'm inspirational. Get this man a shield.
I do love that he wears his uniform. That's kind
of a direct callback, too, because that's how
it used to be. Secret identity. He wore it under
his uni. His uni under his uni. Uniception. Everyone's
got that messy, rained on hair. Yeah, no kidding.
I wish I looked half that good with my hair wet.
It's not. Nope. That's a prop. Star gets it honestly.
Yes, he does. Touch butts. He touches butt. Fondue,
that's what we should call it. Yeah. Hey, girl,
you want a fondue? Boom. Got him. Wow. Yeah.
Got her. Oh, I wouldn't pull my shoes. Oh, I
guess they're pretty close to the ground. How
about the first Avengers movie where he he jumps
out of the plane without a parachute? Yeah, I
think it's the second one when he's jumping down
towards the ship. Hmm. Hmm. Or that might be.
No, no, no, no. He has to jump after Thor because
he takes Loki out of the plane. We'll see. You're
wrong, but you'll see when we get there. Yeah,
yeah, yeah. So whatever movie he's got, he goes
and takes over that whole ship and fights crossbones
on the ship. That's the movie he jumps with no,
with no shoot. I say with confidence, if I'm
wrong, I don't know. I'll give you, I'll give
you 50 cents or something. The more I think about
it, I think you might be right. I know. Oh, boy.
Whee! Woo! He had to hit them pretty hard, and
I'd imagine they had radios. Yep. Luckily, none
of those people looked just a little bit to their
right. Yeah, and didn't hear that sound, huh?
Yeah, I didn't hear him knock someone that was
fully armored, including his head, completely
out with one hit. I feel like he'd be spotted.
That's another one of those instances where the
stealth isn't working like it's supposed to.
Yeah. He's openly running in a field with a giant
American shield on his back. I know. So are those
just leather hats? Because they don't seem to
be doing a damn thing. I think that they're the
opposite of a helmet. I think that they get touched
and just indent on your brain and you're dead
immediately. It's really a design flaw in Hydra's
plan. Yeah. Checks out. Almost got an arc reactor
look to it. Yeah, that's what I was going to
say earlier. When they were showing those, the
scenes with the big round discs they were plugging
the energy into, they looked very arc reactor
-ish. Hey. Hey, firsties. Can you say that again?
No, man. Racism. Yeah, wow. That's dumb, dumb
Dugan. Yeah, he is. Poor man being from Fresno,
though. Oof. Armpit of California. Tell you what.
To all our Fresno listeners, you know it. Embrace
it. Yep. Man, those hats. That guy just got kicked
in the shin. Even sounds like an arc reactor
or the repulsor blasts. Yeah, it does. Oh, no.
Oh, no. Captain America busts in. Oh, yeah. Oh,
yeah. I met that guy. Really? Yeah, Neil. Oh,
God, I've forgotten his last name. Yeah. Anyway,
I met him in Beverly Hills. Nice guy. Somehow
they captured all these guys, but now on the
flip side, they're all getting free and easily
overpowering their captors. Yeah. And I know
there's technology that just doesn't exist in
our world here, but the clarity of those TV screens
for the 40s? For the 40s, yeah. Nah. Nah. I'm
not buying it. Well, Hydra is on a different
level. Those are the clearest TV screens in the
world right now. Yeah. They're using the space
stone to clarify it. Yeah. I like the little
Rolodex countdown or two. Man, I miss when clocks
did that. I used to have an alarm clock that
did that. The actual flipping. Back in my day.
Mm hmm. I feel like I'd have my shield in front
of me. Yeah, well, it's a prop. Just. Just saying.
I mean, it's done something. Everybody's captured.
The only person that's being experimented on
is Bucky. Obviously. Yeah. He's like, Steve,
you're really big. This scene would hit a lot
different if it was the original idea that Bucky
is like a 12 year old. Yeah, that was a weird.
It's a weird. Weird move. The psychics were always
children. Explosions? So you need torque on your
side? Yeah. I got one question for you. Explosions?
The timing. Perfect. How many times is that going
to count down to zero? Well, it was different
switches. Each one was a different area. So he
was clicking them one at a time. So they're each
a couple seconds apart from each other. Fair
enough. Cool shot. Let's send over this fiery
chasm. Yeah. Mustafa. I have the high ground.
Something's wrong with your face, bro. Time for
the big reveal. Face flap. Oh, shit, left a little
scalp on the back. Man, they really could have
made him look terrible, but that is actually
a really good Red Skull. Yeah. Boom. Got him.
The structural integrity of this building is
failing quickly. I don't think I would take the
elevator in a place where everything below me
is exploding. Right. Take my ride. His car reminds
me of, did you ever see the movie League of Extraordinary
Gentlemen? Oh yeah. Oh yeah. So good. Oh yeah.
That is one of the best B movies out there. I
love it. Pitting the ace at a hundred yards.
Bloody close. That was my best Connery. Same.
Walk across this. Don't worry about all the explosions
below. It's fine. We're fine. Everything's fine.
You'll be fine. I would be crawling. I would
be shitting myself and dying. That's what I'd
be doing. I mean, probably that at the same time,
but regardless, crawling. Well, I guess I wouldn't
have made it. Yep. I'm dead. This has been a
good run. Yep. I'm a superhero. Don't worry about
it. Don't worry. So from that backshot, it did
not look like he got any air when he jumped.
I'm not certain that that was a good enough reason
to use the term backshot. Get out of here. I
got some things to say. That's right. A lot of
other good men, they were going to be dead anyway,
brother. That's not fair to put on her. POWs
don't always get killed. Okay, fair. His hope
was, he even said it, that they would be freed
once they won the war. So, in his mind. Hey,
everyone, let's go stand here and look. Yeah.
There's that tune. We did it, coach. Is that
the first time we get the full Captain America
theme music? It might be. Or did we get it when
he was coming out of the thing as well? I don't
think so. I didn't catch it. I don't think so
either. I was too busy looking at his pecs to
listen, really, to be fair. Well, obviously,
I was completely distracted as well. But, you
know. I'm surprised we never got a Howling Commandos
movie or show. Agreed. Agreed. That would be
amazing. Well, it couldn't be amazing. Yeah.
Yeah. Because that's what heroes do. Oh, she
wants to kiss him? Bad. She wants fondue. Fondue?
Yeah, look at those hungry eyes. Yeah, she hungry.
She hungry. She hungry. That's awkward. Yeah.
The man himself. Is this our first cameo? I believe
it is. Yes, it is. The first of many. Yeah. Oh,
but you think he is. Open mouth kissing to ensue.
Followed by fondue dipping. Fonduping? No, that's
too much. I said fondue dipping. That's what
you do with fondue. Oh, it's Natalie Dormer.
Yep. You see Tum Tum laughing. What the hell
is he saying? What he said. Hear, hear. Yeah.
Seriously, I would love to see a like Eyes of
Wakanda style cartoon of Howling Commandos would
be incredible. Yeah, that could be something
special. Kind of kills me that the poster behind
him, he's saluting with his left hand, which
is very disrespectful. That's not to question
the official story. I'm just just pointing out.
Yeah, that one. That's not an official salute.
He's given the two finger thing. That does make
it better or worse. Oh, my. She knew what she
was doing, getting dressed up before she walked
in there. Oh, absolutely. Eyes up, Steve. Bucky,
go away. Nice. This isn't about you. She does
not. Well. Mm -hmm. He wasn't wearing glasses,
was he? Yep. He sure wasn't. Man, that guy's
got no more eyes. All that glass? Nah. Lady Tyrell
hitting on Kat. It's pretty good. Timing. Not
looking for that right partner anymore, huh?
Oh, you thinking something? Yeah. Once again,
how very Starkian of him. Yeah, that's right.
Look at that goofy ass little tie he's got going
on. Yeah, it's fat and short. As in the background,
we see that. Oh, yeah. Yeah. Eyes on Wakanda.
Eyeballing it. Episode five. Getting the shield
back from camp. She feels better now. Oh, man.
I love her. She's such a good character. Now
he wants fondue. Yeah. Yeah, yeah. I really appreciate
that they made that star on his back actually
utilitarian holding straps and stuff. That was
pretty cool. Yep. It's a small costume details.
Bye. Here's this. Put it in the little box of
gone places. Needs a helmet made out of vibranium,
too. Oh, man. Just that one guy. Poor fellow.
I got it, coach. Jeez. That's a hell of an explosion.
Yeah. A lot of bang in that buck. Uh -oh. Boom,
headshot. See, that was the right hand. Whoops.
Damn, that is a hell of a tank. Yeah. His outfit's
super awesome, too. They really did the skull,
the red skull justice here. Yeah, they really
did. I really appreciate the character design.
From the acting, you know, the actor to the outfit
to how the skull looks, all of it, just top notch.
Yeah, 100 % agree. And that's one thing about
Marvel casting. Nailed it. Every single movie,
I think they nailed their characters. Yeah. Fox,
not as much, but Marvel specifically. Fantastic.
Well. Fox Shade starting early. Oh, hey, man,
when you cast Halle Berry as Storm, you've already
written off that you care. What happens to a
toad when it's struck by lightning? Same thing
that happens to everything else. Oh, man. Stupidest
line in Marvel. Oh, that wasn't her, to be fair.
Someone told her to say that. I'm not saying
that it's her fault, but she was not a good storm
to begin with. And then there was that line.
Let me put my hat on. How does the devil move?
Quickly, evidently. Bugs. Rabbit season. He just
dropped right in front of, oh, I guess that's
just a roof, sunroof. Looked like the glass where
they'd be looking out. Yeah, if anybody's in
any of those, they definitely just see them.
Those are windows. Yeah. I don't think I'd like
to be on the stay on top of the train duty. No,
no hard pass, although I mean, spoilers. That's
not the one that loses it, though. I mean, yeah,
to be fair, inside the train is worse, but I'm
just not going to the train at all. I'll stay
up here and watch. Yeah, I'll hold the rope from
the top. Yeah, I'm the rope holding guy. Zola.
It's almost got the Hydra stomper design. Yeah,
yeah. I would hazard a guess and say that's what
they were going for. Oh, I'm sure. Luckily, that
zip line's on the roof. Very useful. Bucky, a
metal arm would come in handy right here. Yeah.
My pistola. Boom. Headshot. Glad that a single
shield hit to his chest completely incapacitated.
He's done. It's over. Oh, Bucks. Well, he'll
be fine. This is awkward. Don't worry, Steve.
We have a little bit of future information here.
Nope, the on top of the train guy managed to
find his way up there. Why do they even go in
sideway back there when they could have just
went in through that window the whole time? Right.
We'd still have Bucky. That's a lot of looking
at that spigot right there. Right. Looks cozy.
Yeah, it's everything you need. A bed and a spigot.
And blood. A little bit of blood on the floor.
You think someone came in with a dropper just
to put just a couple drops, just make sure he
sees it and this will freak him out. He just
turned it to where the cup was nearest to him.
That's a glass of milk. That's upsetting. It
really is. The steak with a glass of milk. Unacceptable.
See, see, he just moved it to the proper spot.
Why did he keep putting it closest to the net?
That's silly. I feel like that's a hand that
you made yourself. I don't like that. Not really.
It's not great. Everyone put your masks on. It's
time to go to work. Don't do the stupid salute.
No, they're gonna. I know. You're absolutely
right. They killed it with his costume. Yeah.
No, we've met Valkyrie. She has nothing to do
with this. Nope. Nope. She is a long ways away.
Probably already drunk. Here it is. God damn
it. Just for you. Everyone. I wonder how many
versions of that they had to do that. Nope, still
too Nazi. Still pretty bad. This is too close.
Well, they're supposed to be sort of an offshoot
of Nazism. Oh, I know they are. Absolutely. I
don't think they necessarily care that they're
adjacent here because they're the bad guys and
they're supposed to be. Well, sure. Sure. But
you don't want to straight up put the Nazi salute
in your Disney movie. Not for lack of trying.
What a bummer of a side effect. That's true.
He would have to be eating a ton of food. I mean,
we don't see anyone. He might be. That's true.
They don't show him. When he goes to the shawarma
place later, he has a normal amount of shawarma.
I mean, that's left. I want four shawarmas, please.
It's kind of like a plate piled to the ceiling.
I like Bucky in Winter Soldier as a character.
I think it's a great storyline, but that fall,
the way they showed it, nobody. Nobody would
have survived that. His his skull was crushed
against the side of the mountain. Sorry, that's
terrible. But not only from the fall, but the
train was also moving. It passes the devil speeds
to start with. Right. So we don't see Natalie
Dormer ever again. I think Carter had her transferred.
Or killed. She did it herself. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
She's like, here, hold this shield that Cap used
to use. Let me test it. Really cool motorcycles.
The forest moon of Endor. Same vibe. These guys
are going to fall out the same way. Oh, absolutely.
Yeah. Whoops. That's one. It definitely used
that in Jedi. I don't remember a flame. Oh, that
was the Wilhelm scream. Yep. Found it. Yep. That's
so messed up. Just leave your grenade sitting
there just ready to be pulled. Oh, that's great.
Jesus. Some strong artillery on that bike. My
head can't as it's Stark tech. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Stark Tech keeping that bike upright, too. Yeah.
Hey, guys, we got our guns. Let's all charge
him. So dumb. Do we want to aim at him? No, let's
make a ring of fire. Bring it in, bring it in.
Well, would they give him the I want him alive
speech? They must have. Mm hmm. No wonder they
were charging with their guns. Yeah. Fair, fair.
Percival, how dare you? You're right, but how
dare you? No, he's right. He's right. What is
that line that Falcon says? Look, he's out of
line. He's right, but he's out of line. planet.
Must not like Brooklyn. Yeah. Got him. Schedule.
Good timing, Commandos. Sorry, man. If I'm Skull,
I'm pulling the trigger no matter what. Yeah.
Don't look. Don't take the time. It's almost
as bad as monologuing. I wonder if the commandos
part of their training is frisbee throwing just
so that they can give the captain his shield
back. Absolutely. They have an ultimate team.
Checks. That's what they do in their spare time.
No. Invented in World War Two. And I guess with
these test rat guns, at least you disappear like
you're gone immediately. There's no pain. It's
you just dead. Far as you know. Well, what's
really happening is they're eating them to that
dimension, the sky dimension from Khori. Oh,
my God. They're all just there now. Right. The
sky world's just filling up with Hydra soldiers.
Oh, shit. That's not good. That would make a
lot of sense for the space zone. Honestly, it
doesn't actually kill them. It just takes them
somewhere. I was. Yeah. The second you said that,
I'm like, shit, that actually could be teleporting
them to someplace fairly easily. Yeah, that man
is on fire. That's the most common trope ever
with the fire guys is shoot them in their tank.
Yep. Weren't you about to touch my butt? Weren't
you about to fondue? Weren't you about to fondue
right here? A swivel chair. That looked like
fun, dude. Yeah, I know. It looked like he could
have kept on going. Yeah, he could have. He's
got stuff to do, though. In the world and stuff.
Zio. What does Zio mean? Hey, the front of that
ship looks familiar. Have we seen that already,
this movie? Maybe. You didn't hear that coming
up? Come on, Cap. Pay attention. It's like in
my car. Yeah. What's this button do? Push the
little red button. That's Tommy Lee Jones. Remember
that little red button? Push the little red button.
He's done this before. Oh, that's so good. Oh,
my. I'll see you again in 70 years. Yeeks. Like,
you just scratched my car, you son of a bitch.
He's about to nuke the world or whatever. I don't
think he's overly worried about it. Oh, oh, so
close. Yeah. And yeet! Off the side. That would
have been an unsatisfactory way for that to have
ended. Right. I would not be standing. It's hanging
off. Yeah. Get out. It's time to go. It seems
like a bad idea. He labeled all of them. That's
so messed up. New York City. Oh, man. Pace Picante.
Nice. Oh, man, that poor guy. Mm hmm. This guy
gets his switchblade out. That's not a knife.
Oh, no. Everyone else is getting the knocked
out treatment. That guy got a knife to the back.
Yeah. He just dropped a bomb somewhere. I think
they're over the ocean. So, you know, a bunch
of fish. They've not been flying that long. I
mean, maybe. Lucky that didn't fall out. Well,
he fell out. Let's try spinning. That's a good
trick. How you doing, Bob? Nice. Oh, God. God,
I totally forgot about that. Man, that's tough.
That is so brutal. Bye. I've got to be really
uncomfortable without a seat. Yeah. Sitting on
it. Wait, doesn't the joystick go with an engine?
I guess these could be designed. You know, this
is a hydroplane. That's not real. It could be.
Yeah, yeah, yeah. Hydroplanes come quick with
two ejecting seats just in case something goes
sideways. Obviously. That ship design is pretty
rad, though, actually. It really is. Man, crashing
a bomb like that into it. I know. Lucky. Like
how big of an impact do you need for this thing
to actually blow up? That's the neat part. It
doesn't blow up. That's my secret cap. That's
my secret captain. I don't blow up. What kind
of bomb are you? Nope. Ugh. Let's wrestle. Yeah.
Super Soldier Wrestling. I'd pay to see that.
Right? S -S -W -E? Yeah, there you go. Oof. Oh,
I bet his skull feels real gross. My skull is
red so they can't see when I bleed. I should
have worn my brown pants. It's like that. Was
that the plane they take people up into? Yeah.
Yeah. Yep. The vomit comment, I think it's what's
called. Oh, man. You have to say it. You are
welcome. It's not a flag, it's just a star, bro.
I mean, no flags does kind of sound nice, but
not this way. 100 % agree, but yeah, with you.
Not by blowing up everybody. Yeah, let's try
a different method, shall we? That's the first
time he actually touched it. Yeah. See you on
Vormir. Hello, space. Hello, space. The power
of the sun in the palm of your hand. Yeah, he's
getting sent to Vormir. Yep, yep, yep. Not even
a hole on the roof of that plane. You see that?
Zip. Zip. It's like alien blood. That wooden
box back in Norway held that thing, but that
metal grate couldn't handle it. Nah, that must
have been lined with vibranium or something.
Special wooden box. Mm -hmm. Wood from the branch
of Yggdrasil itself. That would probably do it.
dead, technically. Well, he doesn't know that.
That's true. Can't you, like, steer it, you know,
hard bank it? Yeah, anywhere else. Like, it's
letting you fly it, obviously, if you put it
down the ocean. Right, you know. Bank hard left,
then start to die. Fly around in circles until
it's out of gas. But if he did what made sense,
we wouldn't have the stories we have today. That's
true. You know, and if I were him, honestly,
I probably would have tried to do at least a
loop. Yeah, something. You know, pull it straight
up, let that thing stall out, have fun with it
at least. Or like you said, aim it down at the
ocean, then just go out and jump out. Yeah, why
he stayed aboard, I don't even know. Well, because
he had to. He did not. One might say Cap ending
up in this ice is a Nexus event. One might. Well,
I think the Nexus event is him. Yeah, I suppose
the Nexus event is his getting the serum. But
this is kind of important. Tomato, cucumber.
Oh, I'll teach you the tango. We'll teach you
a horizontal dance. Mm hmm. Mm hmm. Remember
that time you told him to go away, Tommy Lee
Jones? Bet you feel bad now. You jerk. Oh, man.
Didn't even embed itself. Didn't even, I mean,
it's not even in the water. It's in ice. Now,
I don't know if you know how physics works. I
feel like they could have tried to recover that.
But a plane, well, they did. Did they? Howard,
yeah, Howard went and looked for it. Couldn't
find the ship, but did find the Tesseract. That's
how we get all the events that happen later.
Oh, you're absolutely right. Yeah, yeah. Yeah,
they couldn't figure out where he landed. See?
I'd forgotten. It's been a minute. Nothing to
say now? Mm -hmm. A little scrawny Steve. Scrawny
Steve. Ew, I don't want this one. Can you get
me an updated one? Yeah. And superheroes were
born. That's right. And we're back with the wind.
Brand new game again. Get it? I... Yes. It's
the slowest fan ever, not doing a damn thing
for that room. Yeah, well, you know. It's not
really a functional room. It's built specifically
to make you not confused for a minute. Yeah.
I was at that game. All the effort they went
through to make this room happen and then to
not go back. I know. And make sure that they
did a game that wasn't didn't already happen
that he could possibly know about. Or have attended.
Yeah. He's looking at her like, nah, your ties
too long. Yeah. I know how ties are supposed
to look. Uh, uh, line please. Yeah, you think
just saying something would go a long way other
than calling in the goons. Right. Everyone just
starts sprinting at him. Like, hey man, can we
just talk for a minute? I know this is confusing.
Looking at all these brands, I wonder how much
each of these brands paid to be in this. Hey,
good old Nick. Huh. Well. That's a pretty big
bomb to drop. Yeah, no. Yeah. No. I'm not OK.
There's billboards. Some homeless guy just peed
on me. I want you. All right, folks, we will
see you in the deep dive. Thank you for joining
us in this episode of the Snark Industries podcast.
To join the conversation and further explore
the Marvel Cinematic Universe with us, head on

be in the show notes. But with that, we will
see you in the next adventure. Oh, our first
after credit scene. After our credits. After
credit inception. That's right. We're going to
see Steve punch a bag. Man alive, that poor bag.
Always. Dun, dun, dun. Well, that's what we do
here.
The 1940s. A downed plane is found frozen in the ice with a familiar shield inside, and the story jumps back to wartime to explain how it got there. Steve Rogers, small and sickly, keeps trying to enlist and keeps getting turned away, while his friend Bucky ships out to the 107th and Howard Stark shows off his latest tech at a grand exposition. Dr. Erskine overhears Steve explain that he does not want to kill anyone, he just does not like bullies, and selects him for the Strategic Scientific Reserve. Steve takes the serum, is transformed, and immediately loses Erskine to an undercover Hydra assassin who takes his own life before he can be questioned. Sidelined as a bond-selling mascot, Steve heads to the front, learns the 107th has been captured, and with a push from Agent Carter mounts a solo rescue that frees Bucky and the others and puts him face to face with the Red Skull and Arnim Zola. As Cap and the Howling Commandos dismantle Hydra base by base, Bucky falls from a train to his apparent death, and Zola gives up the plan. In a final confrontation aboard a bomber loaded to level American cities, the Red Skull grabs the Tesseract and vanishes, the cube falls into the sea, and Steve chooses to put the plane down in the ice to save everyone, sharing a last moment with Carter as he goes under. He wakes in the present, sees a changed New York, meets Nick Fury, and is handed the mission that leads to the Avengers.

Hello and welcome fellow Marvel fans to the Snark
Industries podcast. I'm John. And I'm Remy. And
we invite you to join us as we work our way through
every Marvel TV show, movie, and crossover. Meaning
if there's a Marvel character on screen, it's
fair game. All categorized in the temporal order
of their setting. By the time we're done, we'll
have built a complete start to finish timeline
of the entire Marvel Cinematic Universe. To accomplish
this goal and to have a bit of fun along the
way, each episode will be split into two parts.
The watch party and the deep dive. If you're
hearing this, you found one of our deep dives.
This is where we slow things down and take a
more pragmatic, in -depth look at a piece of
Marvel media. We'll walk through the full plot,
explore connections to the wider MCU and Marvel
comics, highlight Easter eggs, unpack lore, and
of course, give you our own personal thoughts
and feelings. Although this episode stands on
its own, it is designed to complement The Watch
Party. So, if you haven't watched along with
us yet, we highly recommend starting there first
and coming back here for the full breakdown.
Most importantly, we want to thank each and every
one of you for joining us on this incredible
journey. We're not affiliated with Marvel in
any way, shape, or form. We're just fans who
are passionate about these stories and these
characters and wish to share them with everyone
in a new and exciting way. So sit back, relax,
and enjoy this episode of Stark Industries. Hello,
ladies and gentlemen, and welcome to the deep
dive for our first... We just watched Captain
America, the first Avenger. John, if you want
to go ahead and tell us what that was about.
So we get the quintessential beginning, I think,
of all of superheroes with Captain America. You
know, I think we've done a little things in a
specific order here. And we've seen some things
that might be considered heroes that happened
before this. But really and truly, in the grand
scheme of Marvel, this is what started everything
in terms of everything that we have today. So
we get to see that on the big screen, and it's
really, really exciting to go in. We start out,
and you see the scene where these researchers
find a downed plane in the ice. A little bit
of mystery around who or what, but ultimately
you get to see frozen solid there, Captain's
shield. Then we immediately jump back in time
to where the setting of the movie actually takes
place, and we have... Steve in his very small
form, trying to enlist for the army, getting
turned down. We have the introduction of Bucky,
who is in stark contrast, I think, to the original
material. This big soldier, you know, example
of a man compared to Steve in this case, who
is small and scrawny and unable to get in kind
of thing. And they're kind of going through stuff.
We get to get to see the first looks at some
of the stark tech in the. MCU proper, we'll say,
for purposes, with Howard Stark putting on a
show at a big expo. And during here, they have
a conversation between Bucky and Steve where
he wants to sign up again, even though he's falsifying
his enlistment papers and everything else. And
he just wants to do the right thing. He wants
to be a good guy. And fortunately for all of
us, Dr. Erskine hears this conversation. And
when Steve goes to try to enlist one more time,
Erskine is there to... sort of intercept him
and gives them the little test. Do you want to
go kill Nazis? And just the great line, I think,
that sits with me since I saw this movie the
first time. I don't want to kill anyone. I just
don't like bullies, you know. So good. Really,
really well said. And so we see him. He sort
of enlists. He goes in. He starts some basic
training on this SSR project, the Strategic Scientific
Reserve Project. We get to see Agent Carter here
for the first time as well. And it's clear that,
you know, Steve in this form, you know, where
he is, even though he is hand selected almost
to be here by Erskine, is leaps and bounds below
all the other men here who were trying out for
this program. And ultimately, they're only picking
one to take the serum that Erskine has developed,
which was going to be the first test in this,
you know, this sort of program to create an entire
legion of these super soldiers to go and fight.
during World War II. Man, can you even imagine?
I know. So crazy. So we get to the scene where
Steve is ultimately picked and he goes in to
take the serum. It's a big lab sort of setting
and onlookers that include members of the SSR
and some of the US government who were there.
And we get to see the transformation sort of
live and everything where he takes the serum.
And his body is transformed into this hero, you
know, this heroic stature. And immediately things
kind of go sideways from there where an undercover
HYDRA agent who had infiltrated this viewing
room causes an explosion, kills Erskine and attempts
to escape. Steve, with all of his new abilities,
is able to capture him. And unfortunately, no
information is gathered as he pops a cyanide
tooth pill and... That's that. So it's all confusing
what's going on. But we have a little bit of
information as we continue about Schmidt, the
Red Skull. But ultimately, as all this kind of
goes down, Steve is sent off to be a song and
dance boy to sell bonds rather than using his
abilities. And luckily for all of us and his
fate would have it, eventually he does end up
towards the front lines trying to do this performance
for soldiers who all kind of make fun of him,
shoo him away. But he learns that. The 107th,
which is part of where Bucky was shipped off
to, had been captured behind enemy lines. And
Steve decides to, with a little bit of nudge
from Agent Carter, to go and try to rescue them.
And ultimately is successful, does so, and gets
everyone out, including Bucky. They get the first
meeting between he, Red Skull, and Arnim Zola
is there as well. And he gets this, luckily as
well, this look at this map that sort of shows
Hydra bases. So they've got a plan. All while
this is happening, Schmidt and Zola on the other
end are using the Tesseract, the Cosmic Cube,
the Space Stone, all interchangeable names here
that we'll find out later, that Red Skull took
earlier in the film to create weapons. wipe everything
off the face of the earth and sort of start over
fresh. This is even above and beyond the German
sort of rhetoric of the war and is ultimately,
because of that, a much bigger threat, which
is kind of hard to believe as Axis powers were
a big threat in their own right. So these things
are happening kind of behind the scenes, but
they're slowly sort of unplugging everything
and learning it as they're going to base to base
and blowing up these hydro facilities. Cap and
the Howling Commandos, Dum -Dum Dugan is there,
which is an awesome character, one of my favorites.
It's cool to see him and everything. And ultimately,
it all kind of comes to a pinnacle as they do
sort of one last mission to capture Zola, successfully
so, but Bucky falls from the train that they
capture him from into a chasm very far below,
seemingly killed from the fall. Though, spoiler,
we know better. Somehow he survived. Zola gives,
yeah, well, you know, somehow he survived. There's
no body, there's no death. That's always been
a trope in pretty much every bit of media ever.
So Zola ends up turning, wanting to live more
so than wanting to take a cyanide tooth pill,
like some of the other agents that have been
captured, gives up the plan. And so they have
one last thing to do, and that's to stop the
Red Skull for good. They have a big sort of fight
as he is taking off this plane. which is, as
we've already seen earlier in the film, the same
plane that they find on the ice later that is
loaded to the brim with bombs, all labeled for
the different cities that they're going to go
destroy completely. Steve is able to get on said
plane and ultimately, after doing battle with
the Red Skull one -on -one, defeats him in a
manner of speaking as he grabs the space stone
and is sort of zapped away from reality. We do
have the luxury of knowing what happens later,
but we'll get there. Yeah, well, you know what
I mean. This reality at the very least. And the
cube falls to the floor of the ship into the
ocean below. This plane, Steve's unable to stop
it. It's going towards the mainland to drop these
bombs. So he makes the decision to put this into
the ice to save everyone. We have the touching
moment between he and Agent Carter where they
sort of solidify this romance that had been building
along the film as well, only for it to be ended
abruptly as he goes under. No fondue to speak
of. No fondue. We then fast forward back to the
present day where Steve is sort of laying in
a bed, this baseball game on, everything sort
of old timey. It turns out very quickly that
this is all a farce as he was at that game and
realizes that. It can't be a live game that he's
listening to. He pushes some people out of the
way and runs outside and sees modern day New
York much different than what he was accustomed
to, for sure. And then we get the first introduction
in this temporal watch through of Nick Fury as
well, who comes to him and sort of explains to
what happens. And we also, to wrap it all up,
have our first after credit scenes here where
Fury comes to Steve and presents him with the
mission. It's sort of left on a cliffhanger.
We, of course, know that that first mission is
going to be the events of the first Avengers
movie, which will get there. But that's what
happened. That's the that's the the breakdown
of the plot. And in terms of how this ties into
the MCU at large, in every way imaginable, I
mean, is the MCU. Yeah, this this I mean, this
is the MCU in terms of how it all kinds of. and
grew to where it was today, we get to see Stark,
which we know directly relates to Iron Man later,
you know, and leads to everything. Working with
and being part of Captain America's story, we
get to see Cap himself, which of course is a
big, huge part. We get to see Bucky, which is
a big, huge part, not only to the Avengers in
general, but now the new Avengers, you know,
that we have through the Thunderbolts timeline
and everything else. Like he is a prominent part,
Senator Barnes later on. Just everything else
that ties in. We get to see Fury coming in and
S .H .I .E .L .D. being involved, which we just
got to touch on a little bit on the last couple
of episodes with the Agents of S .H .I .E .L
.D. show going back in time. So all of this sort
of is coalescing and finally kicking off to all
the branches that ultimately will lead to the
complete timeline that we have today. I mean,
I don't think there's much in this movie that
doesn't tie in in some way. Kind of funny, we've
now seen three directors of S .H .I .E .L .D.
in our limited 10 episodes or 11 episodes yeah
that's true so yeah i mean i said the tie -ins
are pretty much endless here in terms of how
it all goes i would say uh to a certain extent
without some retconning and rewriting the mcu
doesn't exist without this as we sort of know
and understand it how about uh of course uh tie
-ins with the comics itself as this is i said
the first avenger in more ways than one Yeah,
yeah. So there are quite a few tie -ins, of course.
As far as comic roots are concerned, this obviously
pulls from Captain America number one, which
cover dated in 1941, was actually released in
December of 1940. But while the original roots
are very golden age, the actual characterizations
of Steve and Bucky are more drawn from the 2005
run of Ed Brubaker's Captain America. What you
were saying about Bucky being significantly larger
and everything like that, that's from that run.
So the Bucky that we know, the sidekick, the
young kid, very much Golden Age. Yeah, exactly.
So that's the difference there. As far as the
film's conclusion, where Rogers is recovered
from the ice, that's actually pulled from Avengers
number four, 1964. And of course, we have the
wonderful Howling Commandos, which had their
own run, starting with, of course. Sergeant Fury
and his Howling Commandos, number one in 1963.
So those are the big pull -ins. Of course, there
is a ton of other stuff, it being Captain America.
There's so much to pull from, but those are the
big four that I noticed. And as far as Easter
eggs are concerned, we, of course, just a few
of them that I'm going to pull out is the Shape
of the Shield, the original outfit. Of course,
those are fantastic pulls from the comics. The
first time we see Dr. Zola, he's he's seen through
that kind of obscure the warped fish eye lens
and that's kind of fun because we get to see
him as that character later So a big old Easter
egg there. Then, of course, we get our very first
Stanley cameo. He shows up as a general and drops
the I thought he'd be taller line, which is a
great Hollywood trope that can be found in virtually
every franchise out there. So that's a lot of
fun. And finally, I wanted to throw out, which
I found out that John has never seen The Rocketeer,
which is just mind blowing to me. But the director,
Joe Johnson, also directed The Rocketeer. And
aesthetically, you can very much feel the DNA
from that movie bleeding into this one. And I
just I adore that movie. And of course, I adore
this one as well. So all in all, John, what are
your thoughts? Well, since you just decided to
publicly shame me about a movie I haven't seen.
I think I'll return the favor a little bit, especially
for those who just joined us from the watch party
where Remy argued with me up and down that in
the first Avenger movies, Cap jumped out of the
plane without a parachute to join the fight between
Thor and Iron Man. And we've done a little bit
of research and that is just simply not true.
So maybe the first of not so many times, but
I'll savor it while I can. where he is just blatantly
wrong about something. But yeah, overall thoughts.
I mean, this is one of my favorite MCU movies.
It always has been. It's well -written. It's
well -acted. It's, you know, the action scenes
are great. I love that Bucky is not a child.
That's, you know, it just, why would a child
be on the front line? It just, none of it makes
sense. You know, I love that Steve's identity
is not secret here either. Yeah, that's that's
kind of neat. I know that was a big trope back
in sort of the original formations of a lot of
comic books is that everyone had a secret identity.
I like that this, you know, everyone knows who
Captain Rogers is and Captain America being interchangeable.
Love that. The plot, like I said, amazing the
way it ties into the MCU. Well done. The romance
between Steve and Carter. Amazing. We get to
see some of that kind of continue to play out
in the various films and things as time goes
on. Just everything, seeing the Howling Commandos
in action, very, very cool. You know, seeing
Stark Tech happen, seeing Howard be able to do
stuff and getting a little bit of that nod pre
-RDJ and his Iron Man run and everything else,
just all very good. I really don't have any complaints
about this movie. I can't think of anything they
could have done better. Yeah. You know, in terms
of things that I'm just like, why? You know,
but. Except for that stupid salute. I hate that
salute. Well, yeah. The Hydra salute is just
the stupidest thing ever. But, you know. Anyway,
how about you? I'll echo everything you said.
I absolutely love this movie. The everything
from the costume design, the music, the it's
just it's so well made. And for this to be one
of the first, what, the third? Of the big Marvel
tentpole movies to come out. Just so well done.
And Chris Evans as Cap is perfect. Hayley Atwell.
I just really, really well cast. Really, really
well acted. And like you, I have absolutely no
criticisms of this movie. Not to mention it does
hold a very special place in my heart because
it was mine and my wife's first date. So, you
know, big fan. Big fan all around. And I just
love everything about this movie. And like you,
it's one of my all time favorites. I will never
not want to watch this movie. Absolutely. All
right. Yeah, that's that. So our first movie
in the books and folks, we are so looking forward
to the rest of this journey. I'm having such
a good time. Absolutely. We hope you are, too.

Snark Industries hits its first feature film with Captain America: The First Avenger, and both hosts come in adoring it. The full plot gets walked through, from the plane in the ice to scrawny Steve's rejected enlistments, Erskine's serum, the Hydra assassin, the bond-tour detour, the rescue of the 107th, and the crash that puts Steve on ice until a not-quite-right baseball game gives the present away. The comic roots get their due, with the origin drawn from Captain America number one, this version of Steve and a grown-up Bucky pulled from Ed Brubaker's 2005 run rather than the Golden Age sidekick, the recovery from the ice lifted from Avengers number four, and the Howling Commandos tracing back to their own 1963 series. Easter eggs round it out, including the shield shape, Zola's fish-eye framing, the first Stan Lee cameo as a general, and the Rocketeer DNA that director Joe Johnston carries into the film. Personal thoughts land as unqualified love on both sides, with a shared appreciation for Steve's non-secret identity, a grown Bucky who has no business being a child on the front line, and only the Hydra salute drawing any complaint at all.

Synopsis
Set against the harrowing backdrop of the second global conflict of the twentieth century. In a Norwegian church, Johann Schmidt tears a glowing cube from the heart of a carving of Yggdrasill. In New York, Steve Rogers lies on enlistment forms in city after city, desperate to follow Bucky Barnes overseas. He is rejected every time until Abraham Erskine overhears him say he does not want to kill anyone, he simply hates bullies. That answer earns Rogers an opportunity for a place in Project Rebirth. He wins it. Not by out-running the soldiers around him but by throwing himself on a grenade nobody else would touch, with the exception, perhaps, of Peggy Carter.
The Super Soldier Serum works. Steve has gone from a frail Brooklyn kid to the peak of human perfection. Sadly, Erskine dies moments later at the hands of an assassin hiding behind a State Department title. The only super soldier Erskine will ever give the world is handed a shield and a chorus line instead of a rifle. Rogers tours in tights selling bonds until he learns Barnes' regiment has been captured. At the urging of Carter, with whom he has become fond of, he storms enemy territory alone and comes back with four hundred men behind him. With this one act, Steve became the Captain America the world needed. Sabotage after sabotage, he and his Howling Commandos wage a personal war against Hydra, and, more pointedly, The Red Skull. Bucky is lost in the midst of one of their many missions. Steve is devastated.. and determined. The final chase ends over the Atlantic with a bomber aimed at New York, a choice that cannot be undone, and a radio call between Rogers and Carter arranging a dance that neither will make. He wakes seventy years later in a room built of lies. He breaks out only to find a world that finished the war and moved on without him. He is then greeted by the one and only Nick Fury with a new destiny for him.

Comic Roots
Where the episode's people and places come from on the page.
Captain America and Bucky Barnes both debut in Captain America Comics #1 (cover-dated March 1941) by Joe Simon and Jack Kirby, the issue that also introduces the Super-Soldier Serum and puts Cap on the cover punching Hitler months before American entry into the war. The film keeps the essential shape of that origin: a frail volunteer, a scientist who selects him for character rather than physique, a single successful treatment, and an assassin who kills the scientist so the process can never be repeated. The screen version renames the process Project Rebirth and pairs the injections with "vita-rays," terminology drawn from later comics retellings rather than the 1941 original.
The assassin who kills Erskine goes unnamed in Captain America Comics #1 and was not given the name Heinz Kruger until Captain America #109 (January 1969), in Stan Lee and Jack Kirby's later retelling. The film adapts him faithfully in a specific way: he is credited on screen as Heinz Kruger, but in dialogue he operates entirely under the cover identity Fred Clemson of the State Department and is never addressed by his real name. Richard Armitage confirmed the infiltration setup in press interviews. The result is that a viewer who does not read the credits learns him only as Clemson.
The film gives Johann Schmidt as the Red Skull from the start, which is cleaner than the comics. In print, the Red Skull who appears in Captain America Comics #1 (1941) is revealed as George Maxon, an aircraft manufacturer, later retroactively established as a decoy; the definitive Johann Schmidt Skull debuts in Captain America Comics #7 (October 1941) and receives his full Silver Age origin in Tales of Suspense #66 (1965). The film also folds in Hydra, a much later creation first appearing in Strange Tales #135 (1965), and the Cosmic Cube, which debuts in Tales of Suspense #79 (1966), renamed the Tesseract for the screen. None of those three elements existed in the 1941 material the origin comes from.

Paramount, Not Disney
