Patrick Donegal is a private investigator working the same grimy streets of Depression Era New York as Ben Reilly, hired through the middleman Winston to track down a missing man named Jimmy Addison. He crosses paths with Ben during the chase, the two detectives realizing they have been set on the same quarry by the same employer. When their pursuit corners Addison at an oil refinery and the man bursts into flame, it is Donegal who shoots him dead before he can do any harm.
Pragmatic and hungry for a payday, Donegal sees opportunity in the killing, pushing Ben to squeeze Silvermane for a thousand dollars since they alone know Addison is dead. Ben warns him off as too dangerous, and the warning proves sound. Taken by Silvermane's men, Donegal is interrogated about who hired Addison to burn down the crime lord's mansion. When he can offer no answer, Silvermane cuts his throat, ending the detective's life before the night is through.
