Xu Xialing went after the Hood alone and did not come back, sending Shang-Chi on his quest to look for her. What he finds at the end of the trail is not what he was hoping for. Xialing had located the Hood, killed him, and took his demon-possessed cloak for herself, convinced she had found the instrument she needed to build something real: an army of immigrants rising against the forces that oppressed them, a West remade into what it was supposed to be. The cloak has warped her beyond the point where Shang-Chi's voice can reach her, and when he refuses to fight her she looks as though she moves to kill him instead. Kate's bullet finds her before there is any true resolution as to her intent. The cloak flies away to find its next victim. Xialing came to the West to fight for her people and lost herself so completely in that fight that even her brother could not find her inside.
