Milestone: Handed to case to hunt Howard Stark

When Chief Dooley hands Thompson the Howard Stark manhunt. He promises to ground Stark's planes and freeze his accounts, name-dropping a girl at First Federal who owes him a favor. Peggy Carter objects on Stark's behalf and Thompson swats her down with a crack about all the "guys" Carter knew during the war. He treats her as clerical help, sliding a stack of surveillance reports onto her desk because she is "so much better at that kind of thing." Peggy offers to teach him the alphabet. He strolls off unbothered, lobbing "A" words over his shoulder.

The Stark case is his shot at a promotion, and he plays it tight. He builds the raid on club owner Spider Raymond himself, waving off Dooley's uniformed backup as too showy for a paranoid fence. Two men, sidearms only, in and fast. The plan fails. He walks in to find Raymond dead and a blonde long gone. He works the club photographer and manages to turn up a shot of the woman seen with the body. He hands Dooley the break that points the whole office straight at Peggy Carter, the same agent he just used as a filing clerk.

Bridge and Tunnel
Bridge and Tunnel

Jack Thompson is the SSR's self-assured front man, the agent who walks into every room certain he is the smartest one in it and rarely bothers to check. He works the Roxxon angle hard, leaning on a jittery executive for anything that ties the imploded refinery back to Howard Stark. To Thompson, Peggy Carter is barely worth a glance. He tolerates her at the Vita radiation screening only because regulation demands a woman be present while the female staff are scanned and he makes no effort to hide how much the arrangement annoys him. Then Carter is the one who actually cracks it open, pointing out that contaminated clothing will betray the saboteur long after a hot shower rinses the skin clean, and Thompson lets the win slide right past him without so much as a nod.

His real showcase is the interrogation of Miles Van Ert. Thompson settles into the chair across from the terrified chemist and lays out a worldview: fighting crime is like fishing with your buddies, and the biggest fish wins. Van Ert is a small fish. Give up a bigger one, the man giving the orders, and the deal walks out the door the second Thompson does. When the name does not come, the charm evaporates. He hands Van Ert a tree branch to bite down on and beats the answer out of him, waving Carter off because ladies should not have to watch. It is ugly, efficient, and entirely on brand. By nightfall he is behind the wheel of Chief Dooley's car, flooring it after a milk truck at the heart of the stolen Stark weapons case, one step behind a thief he never manages to see.

Time and Tide
Time and Tide

When a bumper off Howard Stark's car surfaces at a crime scene, Thmpson hauls in Stark's butler and works the interrogation like a professional. He digs up Edwin Jarvis's old treason charge and dishonorable discharge, then threatens to turn immigration loose on Jarvis's wife to crack him open. He has the man sweating and all but folded. Then, as luck would have it, the one report that would hold Jarvis mysteriously goes missing, and his sure thing strolls out the door.

Thompson never once suspects Peggy Carter engineered the slip, because he cannot picture her as anything but the girl who covers the phones. He relishes watching Chief Dooley order her to apologize, and when she does, he tells her sorry does not begin to cover it before dismissing her from his sight.

The Blitzkrieg Button
The Blitzkrieg Button

With Chief Dooley traveling to Germany, Jack Thompson assumes command of the New York SSR office. He immediately increases the pressure on the agents to solve the Stark investigation, using Ray Krzeminski's death to motivate the team. Thompson assigns Peggy to cover the phones and continues treating her as less important than the men in the office.

Thompson also oversees the investigation of the dockside witness, Frank, all while talking down to Sousa about the futility of his current venture. Ultimately, while not a huge lead, Frank does provide some information when offered food and drink.. of which he only indulges in the latter.

The Iron Ceiling
The Iron Ceiling

Jack Thompson is assigned to lead the SSR's mission into Russia after the Agent Carter deciphers the message concerning Howard Stark and Leviathan. He initially objects to Peggy's involvement and treats her as an unnecessary complication, but Dooley ultimately requires him to take her along. Thompson remains openly skeptical of Peggy while preparing the team for the operation.

During the mission, Thompson's confidence is challenged repeatedly. Peggy saves him during the assault, and afterward he acknowledges that she saved his life. He also reveals the personal trauma behind his celebrated Navy Cross: during the war, he killed Japanese soldiers who were actually attempting to surrender, only realizing the truth too late. The confession exposes the guilt beneath Thompson's otherwise arrogant exterior and allows Peggy to reassure him that recovering from a mistake matters more than appearing infallible

A Sin to Err
A Sin to Err

Thompson learns that Sheldon McFee has identified Peggy as the woman connected to the Brannis operation and the stolen nitramene. The discovery turns Peggy from an irritatingly capable colleague into the SSR’s central suspect. Thompson joins the operation to bring her in at the automat, treating the evidence against her as decisive.

When Peggy escapes, Thompson helps lead the search through New York and reaches the Griffith Hotel with Sousa. He finds Peggy unconscious after Dottie drugs her and accepts Dottie’s innocent-witness performance without suspecting that she is involved. Thompson takes Peggy into custody, unaware that the real enemy is standing beside him.

SNAFU
SNAFU

Thompson participates in Peggy's interrogation alongside Dooley and Sousa. He is skeptical of her explanation for the secret investigation and initially treats her as an agent who has violated SSR procedures. Peggy's decision to disclose the complete investigation gives Thompson information about Howard Stark's stolen technology, Krzeminski's murder, Leviathan, and the blood of Steve Rogers.

Thompson accompanies the other agents as they investigate Peggy's claims about Ivchenko and Dottie Underwood. He follows the evidence across the street from the SSR while the situation surrounding Dooley's unexplained behavior develops.

Valediction
Valediction

Thompson participates in the investigation of the Midnight Oil attack and ends up on the receiving end of Sousa's exposure. He is the one to give the public statement clearing Howard Stark of the charges against him and announces that Stark will work with the SSR to identify those responsible for the stolen weapons. He works with Peggy, Sousa, and the other SSR agents to identify the target after the attack on Howard's public appearance.

Thompson survives the confrontation with Fennhoff and helps bring the investigation to a close. Senator Walt Cooper subsequently commends Thompson for his role in preventing the attack and offers the possibility of congressional recognition. Thompson gladly takes the credit with seemingly no hesitation.
