Milestone: Recruits Captain America to The Avengers
Nick Fury is the director of a modern intelligence agency, appearing only in the closing turn of the story when Steve Rogers wakes seventy years after his crash into the ice. When Steve bolts from the staged 1940's hospital room and out into the roar of present-day Times Square, it is Fury who steps from a fleet of black vehicles to meet the disoriented soldier. Calm and direct, he tells Steve the truth: that he has been asleep for nearly seventy years.
He is the first face of the new world Steve has woken into, breaking the news gently to a man who has lost everything he knew. When Steve, stunned and grieving, says only that he had a date, Fury lets the weight of it stand, the quiet start of Captain America's uneasy passage into a century not his own.
