Nexus event: Steve Rogers Gets the Super Soldier Serum
Steve Rogers is a frail young man from Brooklyn, rejected from military service five times over for his poor health, yet unwilling to sit out a war while better men lay down their lives. His refusal to quit catches the eye of Dr. Abraham Erskine, who recruits him into the Strategic Scientific Reserve's super-soldier program. Steve receives Erskine's serum and emerges transformed into the peak of human potential. The triumph turns bitter within moments, as a Hydra assassin guns Erskine down and the secret of the formula dies with him.
Left as the only super soldier the program will ever produce, Steve is put to work selling war bonds in a costume, paraded as Captain America while the real fighting happens elsewhere. Word that his friend Bucky Barnes has been captured drives him to disobey orders and go behind enemy lines alone, freeing hundreds of prisoners and coming face to face with Johann Schmidt. Given a proper command at last, he assembles a team and wages war on Hydra across Europe, though the campaign costs him Bucky, who falls from a train in the mountains. He storms Schmidt's final base, sees The Red Skull consumed by the Tesseract, and finds the bomber bound for New York impossible to land safely. Choosing to put the aircraft into the ice rather than let it reach the city, he makes his last radio call to Peggy Carter, promising a dance he will not be able to attend. He wakes nearly seventy years later in a world that has moved on without him.
