Thor
Thor: Tales of Asgard
Hello and welcome fellow Marvel fans to the Snark
Industries podcast. I'm John. And I'm Remy. And
we invite you to join us as we work our way through
every Marvel TV show, movie, and crossover. Meaning
if there's a Marvel character on screen, it's
fair game. All categorized in the temporal order
of their setting. By the time we're done, we'll
have built a complete start to finish timeline
of the entire Marvel Cinematic Universe. To accomplish
this goal and to have a bit of fun along the
way, each episode will be split into two parts.
The watch party and the deep dive. If you're
hearing this, you found one of our watch parties.
This is where we sit down with you and experience
a piece of Marvel media together in real time,
celebrating the high points and poking fun at
the low ones, because that's what heroes do.
To get synced up, here's what you'll need to
do. Pull up the movie or episode on your screen
and pause it right as the Marvel logo is prominently
displayed. Then come back here and wait for the
three -tone countdown. On the third tone, press
play, and just like that, we'll be watching together.
Quick note, if your version includes ads, you'll
need to pause us during those breaks to stay
in sync. Once you finish watching along, we encourage
everyone to check out the deep dive as well,
where we will do an in -depth analysis of the
information we just consumed. Most importantly,
we want to thank each and every one of you for
joining us on this incredible journey. We're
not affiliated with Marvel in any way, shape,
or form. We're just fans who are passionate about
these stories and these characters and wish to
share them with everyone in a new and exciting
way. So, sit back, relax, and enjoy this episode
of Stark Industries. Oh. Lionsgate. Game of Thrones
-y. Yeah, I was literally thinking that. The
music's not as epic. Somewhere between Game of
Thrones and Harry Potter. I like it in either
case. Oh, same, same. Our first venture into
this universe. Indeed. And it's a good one. Yeah,
this one will spend quite a few decades for us.
Yeah, it's a good one. Oh, Feige's part of this.
I didn't realize that. Yeah. Well, Feige's been
involved since the original X -Men. Yeah. Good
for him. Just just doing it, you know? Yeah.
I mean, I like him. I can comfortably say. I'm
a fan. Yeah. Yeah. Right. Oh, arrows. More arrows.
Always with the arrows. That's true. These are,
these are some hefty credits. They need sheets.
Well, you know, I don't, I don't think that they
had gotten to a point where sheets were mainstream
at this point on the sheet area of animating
this. Yeah. Oh, I like that transition. Yeah,
that was cool. Yeah, that was cool. Oh, dude,
I'm excited. All right. Yeah. Settling in. I
wonder who that is. I have my guesses. He's got
a sword, though, so a little confusing. Yeah,
I don't know what that's about. I mean, I guess
he didn't get the hammer immediately. He wasn't
like born with it. Are you Thor, god of hammers?
I should assume so. Man, teenage angst Thor is
going to be exciting. Get the whole Warriors
3 angsty. That'll be fun. Ooh, Loki angsty? As
if he's not already? I was about to say, yeah.
What else is new? Everyone else gets armor and
shields and he's just there in his little cutoff
vest. Let me get his haircut. No. Flowing locks.
No beard yet, though. Which actually is the classic
Thor look. Yeah, yeah. Slick. So is this is this
Loki? Yeah, I could. I presume. I would only
assume so. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Oh, man, sticking
your hand right in the goats. Dude. That feels
weird and kind of awesome. So what she said.
Nailed it. I think they prefer to be called vertically
challenged. Oh, wow. Hands off, Thor. Right.
Got him. Yeah. Put that in your pipe and smoke
it. Mm hmm. Look at that horse in the background.
Not true. A lot of people pray to him. Well,
maybe has he been has he been to Midgard yet?
You know, fair point. Oh, that means something
different. Mm hmm. Oh, hit her with a winch.
Damn. And she's going to hit you with a pitchfork.
Hey, buddy, fork you. Oh, OK. All right. I was
looking forward to watching him get forked. Yeah.
Boy, you just got your ass handed to you. Hit
her with the lightning. Oh, Pegasus. Oh, Pegasus.
Flying horses are cool. Exhibit A. Yes. Fact.
I like how their feet are unnaturally big. You
know what they say about guys with big feet?
They wear big socks. They're drawn weird. Yeah.
Yeah, that too. Two things. One thing could be
two things. Oh. Oh, is that... Edward Forty Hansing,
two women. One of the warriors. What's his name?
Flynn? I can't remember. There's another one.
Yep. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Bob. Look at those guys.
Yeah. Talk about oddly drawn. Yeah. Yeah. Oh,
man. I feel like sympathy laughs. Openly making
fun of the prince doesn't seem like an overly
wise idea. Right? Yeah, that's what I said, see?
Like, literally everybody just did. Yeah. And
why are you picking up Volstagg? Well, he's got
the shortest vest. At least it's not a short
tie. It's true. Man, we are really running into
a lot of heavy, short clothing in this. Stark
Industries theme. Shorter than usual clothes.
I don't know how I feel about that. Brumhilde.
That's amazing. That's pretty good. Didn't we
get a drow? Oh, yeah. Dark Elves, yeah. I guess
Dark Elves, but yeah. Were they from Niven? Niver?
Niverheim? Nivengard? Niver? There's some kind
of... I almost said it's an N -word. That's something
I shouldn't say. Careful. Yeah, yeah. Careful.
Well, every stable person refers to themselves
in the third person. I was just about to say,
I love it when people talk about themselves.
That man has a rib cage. Yeah. Of a God and a
waistline. He's been waist training. He's been
he's got a he's got a girdle on. So there's the
representation of the lamb, not the lambs, the
goats. Tooth grinder and tooth gnashers, maybe.
Yeah, them's the ones. That'd be them, yeah.
Obviously, I didn't read a whole lot of Thor
comics. It's okay. No one's perfect. Nah, man.
Oh, yeah, that's Odin. That checks out. Always
works. Yeah. Every single time. Because I said
so, and I'm your daddy. Oh, okay. I saw the order
right there. Yeah, I think so. Yeah. I took it
and threw it on the ground. Oh, he's probably
not worthy yet. That's why. Okay. Okay. Okay.
He goes and gets a different one. Interesting.
Yeah. A test of manhood. Is that supposed to
be Gungir up there? I was wondering that. I'm
seeing, I'm looking at all the weapons. I didn't
see it on Odin's person, which surprised me.
Yeah, that's a good point. That's probably gun
gear then. He's got fingerless gloves. I think
Stormbreaker was also there in that display,
which doesn't make a whole lot of sense, but.
Maybe at least you're right. Let my people go.
For as long as possible. And I'm snitching. Yeah.
Yeah. Yeah, that's not what I needed. I needed
you to just say you would just not say anything.
Not as long as possible. Right. No, no, that's
not what I asked. It's offensive. I'm a waterbender.
What are you doing, Peter? Oh, is that Enchantress?
Yeah, gotta be. Good job, Lokes. Yeah. Only Enchantress
is talking that close to somebody's ear. Well,
yeah. I mean, kind of her thing. That's right.
He also has fingerless gloves. Oh, and he's wet.
Oh, well, I mean, also kind of her thing. Being
wet? Well. Careful. He's a kid. This is weird.
I need an adult. He needs an adult. Safety check.
He has one. That's the problem. Yeah. She doesn't
look as young as the rest of them here. This
is problematic. No, she really doesn't. I just
splashed myself on the face with it. If you're
asking. How's your magic and why are you wet?
Yeah. That's amazing. That never bothered. That's
a quick tune change. Yeah. I can't do it, actually.
Are they going to sail to Jotunheim? That's certainly
seems to be the the goal here. This man still
has the women somehow. They're like going to
load up and they're just like. Or. Or what? See
what I did there? Yep. I'm surprised I didn't
go with him. Looks a lot like that thing's floating.
I'm not sure there's water under there. It is
floating, right? Yeah. Okay. Well, there's Heimdall.
Oh. Is that Idris Elba? Doesn't quite look like
him. Similar, but not the same. Yeah. Slight
differences. That's kind of cool. It looks like
there's a rainbow coming out from behind the
boat. Yeah. I don't hate that. Bifrost boat.
Mary. Your dad's Odin. I feel like you're equipped
to handle a lot of stuff. And you're Asgardian.
I mean, you're kind of durable. Oh, he's not
going to last very long at all. Always a reason
to be concerned with that, man. We had a tussle.
Yeah, no joke. Let's not forget that casting
him out is one of the options. Yeah, that won't
happen for a while. Yeah, or will it? Well. Yeah,
Loki's wet. Probably not anymore. No, he still
is. It's a persistent wet, man. Wouldn't that
be like the worst spell ever? I would like persistent
wet. Oh, God. Eternal moist. Everywhere you walk.
God. Awful. I hate it. I'm deleting that. And
they ran away. Yeah. Oh, good for him. Good for
him. Yeah, he didn't do it. He didn't break.
I'm surprised. Me too. Always starting with fighting
the Giants. He can't not touch. He can't not
touch. Oh, man. Well, she was barely. She's basically
naked. Interesting. That guy's furry. This bar
is an exciting place. Well, yeah. This waitress
is making. Oh, OK. Never mind. It's over. Still
uncomfortable. Yeah, it's gone. I lost it. Oh,
man. Oh. How many drinks is it going to take?
Wow. That's amazing. That was ridiculous. That
liquid's coming out of that cup into his mouth.
Yep. Oh, that's weird. This is a place of magic.
Turn into what? Like the waitress did? Oh. Roasted
mystery meat. Thanks, I'll pass. That doesn't
sound like the best. It is I, Thor. You. I was
in your boat. You did. What? Who? Scooby Doo.
Well, that one's not a crazy harpy thing. Yeah,
that one's just a normal one. Just a normal harpy
thing. Oh, boy. Oh, I mean, he's daring. Oh,
the son of Odin. Soulless machine. Is that supposed
to be Fenris Wolf? Fenris? He's not supposed
to be like that, I don't think. Uh -uh. Not at
all. That's more werewolf by night. Yeah. Oh,
he's going to be wet. Do it. Do it. As soon as
he said something, he was getting wet. We've
established that wetness is the move. Oh, I mean,
that's the cartoon version of getting hit by
something. Yeah. Getting hit in the face with
a pie. Yeah. Little dwarves up on the chandelier.
What was that? Oh. We've got a good barroom brawl
scene. I'm not mad about that. Yeah. Every good
anything's got to have a good barber and brawl
scene. Oh. Go back after the waitress. Right.
Oh, man, he's going lethal. Oh, there they go.
Yeah. Yeah, he's using the Morningstar. Yeah,
the Morningstar. Yeah. Everyone else is just
punching that guy's out there out for blood.
Oh, right. I think Fenris was out for blood,
too, to be fair. But then again, he is wet because
of Loki. Stick out your hand and see if it comes
to you. Let's establish some lore. Oh, or just
stand there and let Fenris get smacked instead.
Oh, that guy's very white. I think that's Geralt.
Could be. Could be. Oh, he's right where he wants
to be. Yeah, that's not to say. Well, not anymore.
They all turn into a monster. That's just this
whole war is just full of that. Harpies. Yeah,
pretty much. Oh, yeah. Now we're cooking. Oh,
man. That's pretty good. Oh. Coming back. Oh,
no. The Barnes. There you go. You're just really
good at throwing hammers, Thor. Think about that
for a while. Yeah. Yeah. Stew on that. Well,
the door's right there. I was going to say, we're
missing two. Why'd you go and do that? There's
more wet. Oh, that was handy. Well, that's one
way to do it. Yeah. Ste -roke. I mean, he was
right. He said we're about to get another story.
Yeah. I say thee nay. Nay. Weird Loki having
Thor's back. Yeah. Yeah, he's not gotten or yet.
That comes with puberty, baby. I don't know.
I mean, I guess it was kind of even in the movie
had his back until he found out he was half giant.
Yeah, that's true. Oh. Get him right in the pee
pee. Froop Hilda. Amazing. Isn't that the gal's
name in Young Frankenstein? I don't know. Froop
Hilda's got a lot of connotations. Yeah, fair,
fair. The Valkyries. Cool armor. Oh, boy. It's
overtly sexual. It's very... mantis talk there
i know the matriarchy just bite their head off
afterward yeah oh no they crashed uh you know
i guess it seems that way Yeah, she did. Oh yeah,
he said it too. I love it. A quality I've grown
to appreciate. Women, am I right? No hood up.
It's about to get chilly. He doesn't even have
his hood on anymore. Can't mess up that hair.
That's right. Lucky's good. Certainly didn't
look like he was whistling. Yep, that's the explanation.
You figured it out. I guess it's not quite a
morning star. It's only nubbed. It's a nubby
star. It's a just before dawn star. No, that
actually sounds kind of cool. Well, I mean, that
wasn't nothing. Better be ready than not. Hey,
she took a piece of his clothes. Always vigilant.
Just yell. They won't be looking for us. Yeah,
I'm glad that none of them think it's that weird
that Loki's just like, I'm good. Everyone's freezing
to death. I guess Loki is pretty tough. All of
this just looks the same. Yep. Where's the Frost
Giant settlements? Yeah, well, probably under
the ice. Don't worry, Loki's got this. He's about
to make somebody wet. Well, do I have some news
for you. Well, you don't. Yeah. I was about to
say. Your brother just sits there, cheeks out
on the ice. No issue. Chilling. Literally. Well,
not. Not literally. Unliterally. Showing their
breath when they talk is a nice little attention
to detail. Yeah. Yeah, it's kind of fun. Oh,
well, we got Surtur. Yeah, that's cool. He's
kind of goofy looking. I like it. Oh, yeah. So
there's the confirmed. The spear back in the
room was indeed gun gear. It was indeed. Got
the horse with the extra legs. Thus exposing
his chest. That means something different, depending
on who you're talking about. He is a goofy looking
demon and I kind of love it. What you do with
dragons? Wait till they take a breath in? Expose
their chest? I always wait for an exposing of
the chest. Very charged episode. No, it really
is. It is heavy. Whoever wrote this was going
through some stuff. Right. Lonely times. The
fat guy's tired. I mean, felt. It's hard to carry
all that weight. Yeah. My hair was longer. I
kind of look like that guy. He's about to fall
through. You should have done the beard like
that too. I should have, yeah. It's not too late.
I've got lots of good beard years left. Yeah,
yeah. Do it. I was just like regretting his life
choices. Speak friend and enter. Uh oh. Interesting
that he opened one eye first. Okay. This guy
from the bar? Yep, it is. Yep. Well, we had a
wrestling match in my bar, and then they went
away. Oh, man. Yeah. Huh. Like, stabbing it into
the ground was unnecessary. Right. One of them
left this. It just kills two guys. Also, what
is your ground made of? Yeah. Just cut through
it. Soft butter. These are our soft butter floors.
Oh, man. Call back. Look over there. It's glowing.
Found it. Well, there you go. It stuck butt end
into the ice somehow. Right. The blade might
be heated. Maybe. Or it just looks cooler this
way. Well, of course, there's that. That is pretty
impressive. Stupid. Yeah, can you break it free?
But impressive. Starting a landslide inside this
cave? Yes, I can. Hope you don't like your weapon
because you're not getting that thing back. You're
just before dawn start. Oh. Shrinkage. Not uncommon.
Performance issues, especially in the cold. It
just works. It's got a little face on it. And
he's happy to see you. Are you Thor got a fire
stuff? Oh, man. Why doesn't he have any Thor
powers? The powers don't come from the hammer.
Yeah, I don't know. That seems like a fun sword
to have. Yeah. Luckily, you stick it in that
scabbard and it just calms down. Right. Seems
a magical scabbard. Yes. It was never a harmless
quest. Right? Who ever thought that? You lost
your last sword. You're going to leave that one
too in a bar somewhere? No, the dwarves didn't
make this one. You can't blame it on them. That's
true. Or the little people. Wow. Vertically challenged.
We've already been over this. Vertically challenged.
You're absolutely right. Apologies. Yeah. Jerk.
Oh, you got it back. Yeah, well. He doesn't have
the recall thing like Mjolnir does. He had to
go pick it up somewhere. They didn't show that
walk of shame. Yeah. Under all the ice. Yeah.
Spent like two hours digging through ice trying
to find it. but Sif will. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Now
kiss. Man, their feet. How do I? What artistic
design? I was like, you know what? All of this
looks really cool, but let's make their feet
to be about seven sizes too big. Giant stumps.
How are they going to get to the Valkyries without
a way to get off of Jotunheim? I was wondering
that. That's that's a that's a I assume Heimdall's
watching. Do they have a do the Valkyries have
a satellite campus on Yotenheim? Outpost. Oh,
oh, that's cool. OK. All right. I like that.
Not so harmless. Hey, bro. Yeah, right. I stole
their mustache. Oh, it's a piece of material.
Yeah, yeah, no, I know. That's what she took
off his jacket. Yeah, yeah. Sniff it. Yeah, I
knew it. Hunting bears. Yeah, these polar bears
made for hunting. I wonder if one of these is
supposed to be Laufey or they're all just nameless
giants. Yeah. I'd be curious. I'd have to look
at the credits. Yeah. Yeah. Oh, man. The wood
guy gets to ride on the little cart and everybody
else has to walk. Right. Coming, boss. Yeah,
they're going to be getting left behind something
fierce. They're frozen. The guards stand there
so long till they just freeze. Yeah. Oh, wow.
Those are not. Apparently those polar bears were
like 30 feet away. We just saw them take that.
It's going to be like never ending story. You're
going to shoot him with their eyes. Oh, don't
worry. He's got Serger's blade, so. You know
what really doesn't agree well with Frost Giants?
Fire swords. Fire. Yeah. Upper body shots of
everybody just walking. See, I told you. Yeah,
dude. I told you that's what was going to happen.
I knew it. They just stood there until they froze.
Man. Wow. Quick, hit it with the water spell.
Ah! Oh, yeah. As you draw your beat stick. I'm
like, well, what do we do? Oh, damn. That guy
just disintegrated. Oh, that whole bridge is
gone. Oh, there goes the polar bears. Oh, man.
Yeah. Holy smokes. Yeah. He just started an international
incident. Luckily, they were on the world's tallest
bridge over the world's biggest chasm. Right.
Oh, yeah, those ones are OK. Oh, he's I wonder
if he's mad. I can't tell by his face. Oopsies.
Well. Well, you did. Maybe not that specific
thing, but you definitely swung the death blade
at him. He's got a little double axe thing. Oh
no, they're going to inform the king. I imagine
the king is Laufey. Gotta be, right? Yeah. This
is just bear giant number one. General giant.
Yeah, I think that's how he's going to be credited.
Oh, now they're in a jungle? Question mark? Yeah.
I wouldn't call them beasts. Yeah. That's a whole
self burn. Those are weird. Oh. Yeah, yeah. Father.
That means that's Loki's brother. Yeah. Oh, here
we go. They're just going straight to Asgard.
Yeah, yeah. Like I said, international incident.
Did I miss something? I'm trying to figure out
why they're in a terrarium all of a sudden. And
there's Valkyries there. What's happening? I
feel like I missed something, too. Yeah. I'm
confused. How is he just scaling it? A sheer
wall. All right. All right. Seems pretty silly
to have a thatched wall. If you ask me. He doesn't
know how to fly yet either, apparently. Hmm.
Yeah, I'm really trying to figure out how the
Valkyries are just in here naked. Yeah, this
this guy, the overtly sexual continues. Yeah.
We're about to see like full frontal here. Oh.
Oh, well, he might be into that. Luckily, that
room's holding together. Without the sash. Yeah.
I came here to get a bath. How did he get there?
Yeah. We're going to have to do some research.
Figure out how they went from Jotunheim to the
Valkyrie Sanctuary where everyone's naked and
taking a bath. Yeah, right? A little rainbow
bridge between the two. Male. Oh, they all got
dressed real fast. Okay. It says as it's snowing.
Yeah. Thank you. All father. All father. What's
the weather report? My hand is wet. It's raining.
It's cold today. Oh, man. OK. Maybe we'll figure
it out here. Maybe this is the secret to whatever's
happening. I mean. I feel like they're just marching
up to the gates of... We're ignoring travel here.
They've unlocked fast travel. Yep. There's Toothcrowder
and Toothnasher. Hey, there they are. He looks
goofy as hell in his... Not the absolutely absurd
version of them that comes in Love and Thunder
where they just scream the whole time. Oh, God.
Obnoxious. Oh, man, look how big that polar bear
is. He's a... That's a hefty boom. It's large.
Damn. Wow. It's like, yep, that sounds about
right. King Thrine. That's not a... Yeah. Familiar
name to me. Yeah, Normie. It's a pretty rad scepter.
Yeah. Why did you even come up here and ask?
Go sit back up there in your chair. Yeah. What?
You didn't know? Not too bad. Yeah. Sucks to
be you. Your eye. Oh, man. I was really hoping
he'd have a patch on his eye. He hadn't got that
for you. That's pretty rad, though. Yeah. Proud
dad moment. Mm hmm. Well. Oh, there we go. That's
how. OK. Apparently they're in the tree. Yeah.
What is it? What is the name of that tree? Yggdrasil.
Yggdrasil. Yeah. Yeah. All right. So there's
the connecting points of the world tree. That's
how we're explaining just crossing over. Why'd
they get in the boat? Just traveling. I just
don't know. Maybe it's easier. Shortcut. You
don't have to take the bridge. If you can just
sail across the nothing. I mean, you can't get
to that bar. That's right. You don't take the
boat. The bar's connected to no branches of the
world tree. That's right. That's right. We've
seen this before. Well, I guess not. We will
see this again. We will see this again in many,
many, many years. That's dead. Kills me. Yeah.
That was a weird angle. I didn't like it. Man.
Oh. They just keep it there and let it smell
until it's completely disconnected from Asgard?
I guess that's what we're supposed to do. One
of them is. Not whores, horses. Big distinction.
All right, Loki. Get everybody wet. Go splash.
Squirtle. Squirtle, squirtle. If he does a wet
spell, I'm going to actually lose it. Oh, God.
Wow. Attention, wenches. I'm going to go. I'm
going to go somewhere for the women and say that
and I'll report back. I feel like you won't report
back. He's a no nonsense. Well, you did kill
a couple of them and then just apparently walk
across the bridge. Yeah, yeah. Oh, we got Frost
Giants versus Valkyries. This is not a fight
I expected and I'm kind of excited about. Yeah.
There's all the arrows from the opening sequence.
Yeah, right. Come on, Thor. Yeah. Be Thor. Yeah.
He's not been Thor this entire movie, which I
understand. This is a coming of age tale, but
come on. It's got to start with a little something.
Give us a little bit of Thor. Man, that polar
bears. Just massive. Just doing it. The rope
was already framed. That's going to be enough.
Yep. Should be. Should be. Come on, Thor. There
you go. Yeah. They use those as little weapons.
Yeah. Oh, dear. Oh, that's like stepping on a
Lego. We're so cool. Right. It's almost like
both of us have kids. Yeah, that's right. Well,
you got a stick in your foot. So many. I don't
know. Right. Oh, that's incredible. Wow. Polar
bears is apparently the dumbest animal on Earth.
Yeah. And snap. Yeah. Oh, and here goes the polar
bear off the thing. Yeah, there you go. Perfect.
Land on his head, even though he's four times
bigger than all of you. He's knocked out immediately.
Yeah, no problem. Help me get these fangs? Is
that what he said? That's what he said. He needs
those for later. Poor polar bear is going to
wake up without teeth. That's terrible. The cool
thing about Bumbles is Bumbles bounce. No, I
mean, all that. He just threw a snowball. There
it is. There it is. And everybody's wet again.
Oh, man. You've been knocked out this entire
time. I think you need to take a breath. Right?
And he did literally protect you. Yeah, he did
the stick jammy in the foot thing or else you'd
be toe jam right now. Okay, that's why Sif's
not a Valkyrie. She defied Broomhilda, the most
unreasonable person ever. With. One of the worst
names. Sorry if there are any Broomhildas. Broomhildas?
Yeah. Yeah. But, I mean, you got to know by now.
I feel confident that if there are, that they
go by something else. Like Hildy. Hildy. Broom.
Yeah, yeah, yeah. Broomy. Broomy. Yes. They're
out of sync. It's driving me nuts. It's better
than them being in sync, but I don't like that
angle. Look at that dude with the horns behind
him. Okay. Very special looking, man. There's
a big moon and a little moon. They're all drinking
in unison. Apparently you can lead a pegasus
to water and they'll drink. I don't understand
the disconnect between the Valkyries and Asgardians
here. Yeah, same. You think they'd see a bunch
of Pegasi drink Pegasuses? Pegasi? Drinking at
a lake and they'd be like, oh yeah, these are
our people. We're cool. Yuck, yuck, yuck, yuck.
Yeah, dude, yeah But but but my toy, you know
You've carried this burden for half an hour.
Give it to me. My precious. I was about to say,
yeah, somebody watched Lord of the Rings before
they sat down to make this. Right. It's the same
exact vibe. And something else, because it's...
And also, yeah, apparently some adult entertainment.
Oh man, here it comes. He's been holding on to
another secret for a long time. Mm -hmm. And
he said no. Yep. Oh yeah, I love the thumb sticky
-out -y sort of from the scabbard thingy. So
good. Yeah. Oh, boy. Oh, wow. That was a. Oh.
Oh, wow. OK, well. Glad you've been sitting here
just being a royal advisor for however long,
and then all of a sudden you're like, hmm, never
mind, kill everybody. Also, shoot with your eyes
closed. Now's your chance. He's in water already.
No. I mean, he does have this sword of Surtr.
Feels like something he could do. Yeah, this
man. This man's about to bring about an early
Ragnarok. Uh -huh. Pow. Grab this regular sword.
I guess I'll use a normal one. Yeah, it's still
a sword. We do get a little bit of hammer Easter
egg at the bar. Otherwise, this has been largely
disappointing for who Thor is. Uh -huh. I completely
concur. Love that they brought the throne. Yeah.
Well, you know. Like, you know. If you're going
to do stuff, you might as well do it. I am a
generous God. I think that I would give away
all these polar bears after what just happened
at the Amazon place. Or the Valkyrie place. I
don't think they were there to see it. Yeah,
that's fair. They hadn't got the pigeon from
that. Yeah. There you go. He had to walk all
the way back over there to get gun gear so you
could do something. Right. What a nerd. It is
weird that he doesn't have it on his head. Yeah.
Oh. Oh. Wow. Odin also is sucking. What is happening?
He's all cooked on his left side. Yeah. Why'd
you walk over there, man? Well, it's more dramatic
this way. I'll wait for him near the weapon that
he can call to his side. There we go. Now we're
seeing the Allfather do stuff. Hell yeah. Oh,
yeah. Oh, yeah. This is what we needed. Mm -hmm.
This is what I came for. Yeah. Oh, Odin's giant
now. Whoa. Ah! Smokes. I don't remember this
trick. Yeah. The images of Icon. Oh, how'd he
get him? Come on now. Surrounded by faces and
he chooses the right direction. You can see Odin's
bald spot a little bit every now and then. So
are they saying this is how he loves his eye?
Maybe. He's still got it. At least as of now.
I don't know. It's kind of wincy. Closed. He's
had it close the entire time. Maybe. Maybe. Not
really. Yeah. Everyone toot the horn. Ballista.
Oh, my God. Okay. So way more of the inside of
that thing's mouth than I wanted to. Yeah, yeah,
yeah. Oh, this is some goofy looking things.
Yeah. Man, I'm glad that they're literally enemies
at the gate. There's people just stuck there
in the cafeteria having a cheeseburger or whatever.
Y 'all need to be ready in case something happens.
Didn't you hear the horns? Yeah. Oh, man. Loki
didn't get his own horse. He's got to ride side
saddle. Terrible. Oh, he switched. Bounces to
the other. Change places. Oh. Oh. I mean, maybe
a higher altitude entry would have been better.
Yeah, no, let's stay down where they could just
throw stuff at us. Yeah. Nice hero landing. Excellent.
Oh, she's going to do it. She's going to do it.
Well, you must. Grand would breach it. Oh, boy.
Oh, man. You can kind of see his butt shaking
a little bit there. Yeah. That's right. Oh, does
he have a... Oh, he does. Yep. Okay. Okay, I'm
alright with this. Whosoever holds this spear,
should they be worthy. Yeah. It's wild work that
Mjolnir's literally right there, though. He's
not using it. Yeah. Like, I'm not mad about seeing
him use gun gear. That's pretty cool, but. Yeah.
Well, he's not worthy yet. It's kind of what
this whole thing has been about. He's just unworthy.
Granted, he hasn't even tried it, but. I soaked
up all the light. Now it's going to be nighttime
in here. Oh, dear. He's unnecessarily sweaty.
This is pretty cool. I like this. Agreed. Use
those tears, Loki. Make him wet. That sounded
like a lightsaber for a second. It did, yeah.
This is shortly after Disney got the rights,
too. So, you know. Interesting. Whoa. Got him.
Whoa, there you go. That's amazing. All right,
Thor, we see you. You just impaled that poor
guy to the wall. Okay, finally being Thor. Poor
guy. He was cool until like 10 minutes ago. Yeah,
that's fair. Yeah, I think you're in the right
there. Seems he might have been pretending. Oh,
Loki. Bro. Loki said, hmm. That was kind of cool.
We got to see his flesh and bones disintegrate.
Yeah. Look at that shot. So Loki could forget
the years of friendship. Yeah, he's over it.
He's like, I won't forget the betrayal, but I
can forget those. No problem. Be putting that
thing away. I can forgive, but no, no, actually,
I can't forgive. All right, you can go out there
with your with your dad's spear and defeat the
Frost Giants real fast. Oh, yes, yes. That's
pretty great. Here it is. Oh. Jousting. Man,
they're so big. With all the rest that were just
standing there like, yeah, do this. Go get the
king. Well, that's a mess. You probably could
have just started with the sword and. Yeah. Seeing
where we're not. Road in all crazy on your. Like,
bro, that wasn't for you. Okay. A lot has happened.
Even his feet are giant. Yeah. Look at that.
Even the giant's feet are giant. Right. It's
10 minutes after beginning. But, Dad... Well,
you should, because they've done literally nothing
this entire time. Right. Right. Hmm. I guess
you could stay here. Huh. Oh, okay. Why is he
making that face? It's like, did you not know
you were Odinson? I know, yeah. What do you mean?
Surprise! Spoilers, God. Right? Oh, he's at the
wet pool again. It's a pensive. Oh, yeah. I come
from a land from a far away place. I don't want
to be wet this time. Oh. I'm not hiding. I'm
freezing this water instead of getting wet. Yeah,
that was. That was pretty much vengeance. There
was no... Yeah. Wow. Funny, because... Yeah,
I know. He's a... Will your big feet carry you?
Yeah. Stomp in here. Look, he's got you above
his bed. That's cute. Yeah. It's like having
a map of the world above your bed. Nope. That
eye is still closed. No, his eye is not covered.
Come on, man. It's closed at least still. It
is. It is. I just wanted to. Apparently you didn't
learn anything here and you're going to do this
exact same kind of thing. So hundreds of years
later. Just wanted to prove himself. Destroyed
a bar. Started a war. You know, whatever. Just
kid stuff. Good dad, Odin? That's weird. Does
it feel right? Yeah, right? There's no safe guess
for the first part. Still looking just as dumb.
Faithful listeners. Yeah, right? Wow. Wow, he
actually growled. Nary a torch lit. Oh. with
my club yeah i disembowel with my like the one
person that can't disembowel my big ball okay
oh i was about to say what am i looking at here
i figured it out chicks dig scars that's true
Frigga agrees. Let's wrestle. I'll bet you would.

Touching that butt.
Asgard, long before the events of the Thor films. Thor is a teenager fighting staged arena matches with a sword, Loki is quietly learning magic from the Enchantress, and Sif is training toward the Valkyries while the Warriors Three spin tales taller than anything they have actually done. Stung by feeling untested, Thor takes Loki's bait about a legendary weapon hidden in Jotunheim and stows away aboard the Warriors Three's ship, a trip that detours through a tavern and ends in a wrecked barroom before the group commits to the journey for real. In the frozen wilds they find the Sword of Surtur, and a pursuit by frost giants forces Thor to use it, killing two of them and cracking the bridge between realms. The fallout is a full Jotun army at Asgard's gates. Back home, Algrim reveals himself as no ally at all, taking the sword and cutting down the Asgardians before turning it on Odin, who loses an eye in the fight. Thor claims Gungnir, pins Algrim to the wall, and refuses to finish him, a mercy Loki does not share. With the sword recovered, Thor rides out to offer it and himself to the frost giant king to end the war, and the siege lifts. Asgard settles, Odin recovers, and Loki, alone with a conjured serpent, breathes frost across it and watches the ice take hold.

Hello and welcome, fellow Marvel fans, to the
Snark Industries podcast. I'm John. And I'm Remy.
And we invite you to join us as we work our way
through every Marvel TV show, movie, and crossover.
Meaning if there's a Marvel character on screen,
it's fair game. All categorized in the temporal
order of their setting. By the time we're done,
we'll have built a complete start -to -finish
timeline of the entire Marvel Cinematic Universe.
To accomplish this goal and to have a bit of
fun along the way, each episode will be split
into two parts, a watch party and a deep dive.
If you're hearing this, you found one of our
deep dives. This is where we slow things down
and take a more pragmatic, in -depth look at
a piece of Marvel media. We'll walk through the
full plot, explore connections to the wider MCU
and Marvel comics, highlight Easter eggs, unpack
lore, and of course, give you our own personal
thoughts and feelings. Although this episode
stands on its own, it is designed to complement
the watch party. So, if you haven't watched along
with us yet, we highly recommend starting there
first and coming back here for the full breakdown.
Most importantly, we want to thank each and every
one of you for joining us on this incredible
journey. We're not affiliated with Marvel in
any way, shape or form. We're just fans who are
passionate about these stories and these characters
and wish to share them with everyone in a new
and exciting way. So sit back, relax and enjoy
this episode of Snark Industries. Hello, ladies
and gentlemen, and welcome to the deep dive for
Snark Industries. We just got finished watching
Thor Tales of Asgard. John, what was that about?
All right, so we get to see younger, teenage,
dare I say, versions of some sort of familiar
favorites to anyone who enjoys the MCU or these
comics. Thor, obviously the title character,
and Loki as well. The Warriors 3 and Lady Sif,
all of who make appearances again in the Thor
movie, the live action one that will come later
in our timeline. But here we get to see some
of their sort of... Origins? Beginnings. In a
manner of speaking, yeah, beginnings. I mean,
they're all kind of established already, and
we see very early Thor, who, strangely enough,
and I still have not fully over it yet, is using
a sword to sort of fight in these arena -style
matches that's all just for kind of show, not
really having seen any sort of real combat himself
outside of these sort of staged events for crowds.
The Warriors Three are spinning. fanciful, embellished
tales. Loki seems to be sort of learning bits
and pieces of magic from the Enchantress, which
was kind of cool to see her. Yeah, that was an
interesting drop. Yeah, kind of see her here.
I don't think we see her anywhere else, at least
not in the sort of main MCU continuity, at least
not as of yet. But so kind of neat to see her,
though I was a little disturbed how she was kind
of hitting on a teenage Loki when she did not
appear to be of that young of age. I don't know.
We don't know the age differences there. We might
need to call Chris Hansen. It's not clear yet.
So anyway, but that was kind of cool to see her
teaching him some magic and everything else.
And ultimately, we get this sort of scene where
we get to see what Lady Sif is doing, who seems
to be the most accomplished out of all of them
at this point of their stories. She kind of does
a little battle with, you know, a play battle.
of sorts in the stalls of the horses and Pegasuses
that are there in Asgard and smacks them around
pretty good, really, with a pitchfork and a bucket
of oats. Yeah. So we get to see these things
and Loki kind of, you know, as Loki does, but
I think less in a less mischievous way and more
of just maybe supporting his brother way here.
It certainly seemed to be. Yeah. Sort of convinces
Thor that he needs to be doing more. real stuff.
And by telling him this story about this weapon
that is in Jotunheim, we kind of learn to be
the weapon of Surtur, the fire sword, death,
or whatever, and does this thing. And Thor kind
of goes to Odin, and I don't think really shares
this necessarily, but kind of has this argument
with him about how he's just doing these kind
of dumb things. And so this is a trope that we
get to see again later. Ultimately, between all
these things kind of happening, Thor's feeling
a little less than. And we all know that Thor
doesn't like feeling less than. So he takes the
bait of this story from Loki and the two of them
stow aboard a ship that the Warriors Three are
taking to Jotunheim for an unrelated thing? Question
mark? Supposedly. I don't think they were actually
taking it to Jotunheim. I think they were just
going to drink. Yeah, so that's the story they
were telling. Yeah, I guess that kind of checks
out with how they're telling these embellished
tales. So they're saying they're going to Jotunheim,
but in reality, they're going to just waste time.
But if it was planned to make another stop or
not, unclear, because when they get to the bar,
this sort of whole thing sort of unleashes into
a ballroom brawl as Thor is there, and Loki ultimately
uses a little bit of one of the spells he's learned
from the Enchantress to splash some water on
Fenris, who... Was it like Fenris? It wasn't
how Fenris should have been, but it looked more
like a werewolf, which was kind of strange. And
they kind of had this big barroom brawl. And
I mean, this bar that they went to is left in
shambles. And so they load up aboard the boat
to decide, why not go to Jotunheim? Why not?
Yeah, why not us? And so they do so and everything
else. So we see them kind of get there. They're
pushing through the Jotunheim tundra. And they,
you know, we see, which is kind of a cool nod
that, you know, all the Warriors Three and Thor
and Loki are all there. And, you know, the four
that we know as Asgardians are all bundled up
in furs and shivering and everything else. And
Loki's just casually walking along because, you
know, we have the dramatic irony of knowing that
it's because he's a frost giant. But they don't
know that and he doesn't know that, at least
at this point. So we see them kind of going and
looking for this, you know, this weapon. And
Thor ultimately does recall this tale that his
father had told him about this battle that he
did with Surtur and is able to sort of use that
tale to envision where the battle took place
somehow. And also where the sword fell after
somehow, because, you know, that's how that works.
Exactly. Yeah, exactly. And they go down to this
like cave system. in the ice to try to locate
this weapon. Meanwhile, back on Asgard, Odin
is being concerned about Thor's well -being.
He's not seen him in a bit. He comes to, who
ultimately was entrusted with this secret, a
dark elf that's named Algrim, who promised Thor
and Loki before they left that he would You know,
we joked about keep their secret as long as he
could, which expected him to crack immediately.
And, you know, he did not actually as Odin kind
of came to him and says, yeah, I was impressed.
Where are they at? What's going on? You know,
kids, am I right? And, you know, that's kind
of that's kind of how that conversation went.
So kind of an interesting thing in this character
that we have in Algrim here that seems to be.
On these guys' side, and is kind of described
to be Thor's mentor, teacher, instructor throughout
the years, clearly someone who's been a part
of his life for a long time. Because even though
these are teenage versions of these characters,
they're teenagers by Asgardian standards, which
I still feel is several hundred years old. But,
you know, because I believe in MCU continuity,
Thor says he's around the 1500s. year old range
in the happenings of the live action movies.
So that, that that's kind of how I put it together
in terms of how old they would be in our years,
but yeah, where the timeframe is. Yeah. Still
teenagers in their years. And obviously this,
this Algrim fellow has been along for a lot of
this. So, you know, we kind of sit in this scene
of this concern that's happening as they're all
building up. We cut back over to Jotunheim and
they do in fact, find the sword of Surtur. How
cool. And, you know, they knock it out of the
frozen icicle with a morning star, an almost
dawn star, as you called it. And it begins to,
you know, glow this bright fire. And I mean,
the sword is, you know, four times longer than
any of them are tall kind of thing. And fortunately.
this particular sword is magical in nature and
you just could just walk up to it. And when you
try to grab it, it just goes and fits, it fits
in your hand. It's, it's, it's really, it's a
good feature. So, you know, that's, that's what
we're saying. So, you know, this thing shrinks
down to fit in Thor's hand. And as he shoves
it into his scabbard, the, you know, flames that
were erupting from all around the blade dissipate
and it is safely tucked away there somehow. That's
not to question the official story. That's what's
going on. So as they're doing this and kind of
moving through the wilderness, Somewhere along
the line, they had also been attacked by this,
not attacked, came across, question mark, this
group of like little ice sprites. It was kind
of a weird thing. They didn't do anything, but
they plucked a piece of one of their clothes
off and took it to this group of frost giants
that are clearly some kind of scouting party.
Yeah. One of them has a sled with a couple of
polar bears to pull it around. The rest of them
just had to walk. I guess they drew short straws
that day. And so they give this thing there.
They, you know, they hand this little piece of
clothes over to these frost giants and the polar
bears give it a sniff. And 30 seconds later,
they found them all. So then we have this sort
of big chase scene as they're all trying to get
away from these guys. And as they cross the bridge
over Khazad -dum. Actually, you know, the. Sorry
to interrupt, but the distance that the bridge
went down now makes sense now that we know it's
on the tree. That's true. Yeah. Yeah. That's
the bridge that's going over. Yeah. I thought
it was wild, but yeah, we did figure it out and
we're confused in the watch party, which luckily
we did figure it out that this bridge actually
was one of the bridges between worlds, which
is how they kind of set up how Yggdrasil, the
tree of other world tree, excuse me, works here
is that, you know, these, these. realms are connected
by literal bridge so they do start running across
it you know a couple of the the frost giants
that were look like statues and you were convinced
that they were but i knew better somehow i just
had a sense and they broke out of the ice and
so they're all kind of doing you know doing this
thing and and it looks like for a second that
loki is falling behind that he's going to be
caught captured hurt injured killed by these
things And so what's a young budding god of thunder
to do other than draw the sword of Surtr and
be like, I don't want to hurt you. Be the god
of fire. Yeah, as he, you know, holds a sword
out at him and claims innocence. And, you know,
the frost giants, being frost giants, I suppose,
decide to not heed those words and come at him.
And he puts the sword at him and this big gout
of flame shoots out and disintegrates them instantly
as well as half of the bridge. And they all get
away from there to apparently another realm that
has the Valkyries, who are not part of the Asgardian
kingdom in this tale. Yeah, that was weird. Which
was strange to me. I don't know if that's got
any sort of roots, perhaps in a run that I'm
not aware of. But for this tale, it seemed like
that's where they were going, this group of Valkyries
led by Brubhilda, which is a hilarious name.
And it appears that Lady Sif is being an aspiring
Valkyrie herself at this point of her tale was
there. And as the, you know, Thor and the others
get there, Thor himself kind of is the only one
able to, not really clear, scale the sort of
outer wall of the realm and gets up there and
they're all naked in a pool taking a bath. And
it's just a kind of a strange, strange way to
introduce everybody like that. But he comes to
Sif and the idea is like, hey, give us some horses
so we can go back home. I've got this sword and,
you know, it's cool. I'm going to go give it
to Odin and everything's going to be fine. Everything's
fine. And, you know, immediately all the women
are suddenly dressed and attacked and knock Thor
out pretty immediately and put him in chains.
We see him wake up sometime later, obviously,
from that. And everyone's kind of like, you have
this sword. You're a man. You're bad. And it's,
you know, whatever you expect. You expect everyone
to kind of, you know, well, I've got allies with
me. And then, you know, the Warriors three come
dangling down from a chain because they also
have been captured somehow during this time.
But we don't see Loki, at least as not of yet,
because he's being Loki and doing sneaky stuff.
And he runs in and grabs a sword and is like.
Look at this, you know, and he's going to use
it on these Valkyries for some reason, even though
they're supposed to be on the same side. But
they're not here. I'm so confused by that. Very
confusing. But ultimately, Thor's like, no, don't
do it. We're good guys. We're not here to kill
all the Valkyries. And so they don't. And as
all this is happening, the Frost Giants back
on Jotunheim have gone back to their king. They,
you know, apparently this sword is somehow very
important to them. The most important thing ever.
And so they're not ready to go to war. Yeah.
Not really clear, but I guess they don't want
Odin to have it. I don't know. But at the very
least, it would make sense. You know, the two
of the the two sort of guards that got disintegrated
by Thor's actions, although he didn't, I don't
think really mean to kill them like that. No,
he did swing the sword, but I don't think he
knew that it would just, you know, shoot a laser
of fire at everybody. Yeah. So, you know, they're
ready to go to war. So we've got. Two sets, you
know, we got one party that shows up at the Valkyries
area and, you know, sort of attacks them as all
this is kind of going down. Luckily, between
everything that's sort of played out, Thor is
freed by his own strength, ripping these chains
out of the ground. And, you know, passing by,
Frostrider, you know, knocks down a teetering
Warriors Three, and Lady Sif is there, too, helping
in some way. And there's a big one, and he's
super scary until his polar bear... inexplicably
knocks him off the top of the thing and he just
falls into his doom. And then these warriors
three snapping from their, you know, chain or
whatever, their rope that they were dangling
from falls on its head and immediately knocks
us out. And they just decided that they're going
to take his teeth. I don't know. It was, that
was. So that poor thing's going to wake up. Yeah.
Toothless. Yeah. That's what's going to happen.
That's the new toothless. This is not how to
train your dragon, but we have a new toothless.
So. All this is kind of happening, and as that
kind of folds up, the Warriors Three, Loki, Thor,
and Lady Sif do get their horses. She's basically
kicked out of the training program by Broomhilda
because she's helping the stinky men or whatever,
even though they just totally saved her. It's
very weird. But they do give her the horses,
the Pegasus, to get out of there and get back
to Asgard, which is good timing because, meanwhile,
back there... Meanwhile. Yeah. The king and the
rest of the Frost Giant army has showed up at
Asgard's step that was basically like, hey, give
us a sword back or we're going to attack Asgard.
And then they all stood there and pouted for
a little while. But of course, we know that the
sword isn't there. So Odin sends off a small
group of warriors as well as this Algrim for
some reason to go and find Thor and the sword
to be able to bring it back. And he, you know,
I guess it's just. Counting on that, his planning,
his all -father planning didn't seem very all
-fathery, I tell you. And so as this is kind
of going down, doesn't seem to be overly prepared.
Eventually, they do kind of get back. And as
they stop to, I guess, give the Pegasuses a rest,
they're drinking in a pool. This group of, this
contingent led by Algrim or joined by Algrim
does find Thor and the others. You know, Algrim
comes up to him and says, you know, hey, we're
here to get the sword. This is important. The
frost giants are, you know, going to attack us.
We don't give it to them. So Thor's like, hey,
this is an evil thing. It's a terrible thing.
We, you know, we can't just give it away. We've
got to keep it safe. And, you know, hands it
over to his mentor and instructor who immediately
takes it and says, actually, your dad made all
my people die. And I've just been sitting on
this secret forever. And so. I'm a bad guy now.
And he draws the sword out and kills all the
Asgardians that are there, except for the main
ones that we've been talking about. Naturally.
Yeah, of course. As one does when they've been
a secret bad guy. Yeah, when they've been a secret
bad guy this whole time. And so he, you know,
then takes one of the horses, one of the Pegasus
and says, you know, effectively, like, hey, if
you come back to Asgard, I'm going to kill you.
But I'm going to go kill your daddy because he's
the worst. Which, I mean, fair. Well, I mean,
we've seen Odin a lot of times, and it's hard
to argue. Yeah, he makes some very questionable
decisions, for sure. And so he shows up there,
and we see Odin kind of back in this armory,
I suppose, that Thor was in before, which he
once again didn't choose a hammer, even though
Mjolnir was totally there. He got another sword.
That's neither here nor there. But Gungir is
there. And then so he's there, you know, Odin's
there as well as this Algrim guy. And they kind
of have this sort of epic battle. And Odin's
really getting his butt kicked, which was shocking
to me in a way. I guess that just shows you the
power of this blade. I mean, it's the blade that
brings Ragnarok. It's holding up to the hype,
at least in this showing. And meanwhile, the
Frost Giants are attacking Asgard, who, as I
said before, Odin didn't seem to prepare them
for whatsoever. There were a few kind of guards
on the wall, but everyone else was just at home.
Like, we saw people, like, eating dinner and
just normal stuff, even though there was an entire
Jotun army at the gates. Like, I don't know.
It's just very strange. I'd be a bit more concerned.
Yeah, as would I. So, as all this is happening,
you know, we have Thor and the others finally
get here. You know, they're down one Pegasus,
but... It's okay, because Loki's real small and
can ride on somebody else's horse, and it's not
a problem. So they all kind of show up. Thor
and Loki decide to split off from the rest of
the group and go try to find Odin, while the
rest of them try to turn the tide of this battle
with the Frost Giants. Okay, great. So Thor shows
up. After Odin's already beaten down, we see
his eye damaged in this battle, although he doesn't
get his patch. Yeah, kind of disappointed by
that. This is the setup for Odin's single -eyedness
in the future. Thor grabbing gun gear does battle
with this, uh, with this Algrim. And we have
some really actually pretty cool scenes are all,
you know, apparently the blade of Surtur take,
takes all the flames out of the room and then,
you know, he sheathes it. So it's real dark in
there. It's kind of running around. It's very,
very, very, very cool. It's a very, very well
choreographed, very well put together sort of
fight scene. And finally Thor's doing some Thor
type stuff, even though still without, yeah,
finally, I mean the whole time he's just been
this, this mook. It's been awful. Uh, but, Ultimately,
Algrim goes kind of running across the floor
and very, very awesomely Thor hucks Gungir at
him, sticks him against the wall. Oh, it's so
good. Goes and picks up the sword of Surtur,
puts it back away and says, you know, I can't,
I can't, you know, turn my back on all these
years that we've been friends, even though you've
suddenly became this bad guy, just ruined everything
in the last 20 minutes. I can't do it. And then
Loki walks up immediately, grabs the sword, just
kills him. Which seems on brand, to be fair.
I mean, you know. So with that, Thor says, hey,
it's all right, bro. We're cool. You know, he
was kind of a bad guy anyway. I couldn't do it,
but I'm glad you did it. So, you know, give me
that sword. I'm going to go take it to the Frost
Giant so we can stop this war. And so he gets
in his chariot with Toothgrinder and Toothnasher
at the helm. And you think we're going to have
this big, epic, cool Thor thing. And he rides
out there and they immediately just jumps out
of it. And then. Goes through all of the frost
darts. It gets smashed. It gets smashed, yeah.
But, you know, all the other frost darts just
stand there and watch. And he goes up to the
king and he's like, I'm going to give you this
and myself as a prisoner if you stop this. And
the king is like, all right, okay. Sure, why
not? And, you know, then his son is like, wait,
we're almost about to take over the city. And
he's like, well, you know. And so there's a get
ready to leave. Thor's like, all right, I guess
I'm going for mine. You know, I guess I'm going
for my imprisonment now since I offered it. And
the guy's like, no, just go take care of your
dad. It's fine. And then they just leave. Very
sort of anticlimactic ended to this big war that
they were, you know, hiked across the realms
to do. But that's what they did. And then as
things end, we kind of see everybody kind of,
you know, being able to regale people with real
tales. The Warriors three and Lady Sip is there
and, you know, goes and. Plays tonsil hockey
with Thor this time instead of having a real
fight, which, you know, I mean, you know, it
is interesting. Yeah, you definitely kind of
see that sort of connection there in the future,
though they abandon it completely when that time
comes for somebody else. But we'll get there
when we get there. Yeah, yeah, we will. You know,
and Odin is recovering in his bed and everything
seems to be OK and basically tells Thor he's
done a good job, which was off -putting a little
bit to see good dad Odin. We did get a little
piece of that. And good dad and Odin saying good
job, you know, even though he started a war,
killed a couple of people, destroyed a bar. Well,
you know, listen, we don't we don't we don't
we're not keeping track of all the thing. Yeah,
right. So, you know, we kind of have this set
up. And, you know, and finally, our last character,
we have Loki, who is sort of powderly sitting
in a chair. We seem sort of conjured the same
water snake. that he learned from the Enchantress
earlier in the film. And he breathes ice on it
and makes it go icy, which makes me feel like
maybe he's at least starting to suspect, though
he doesn't seem to know later either. So maybe
he just thinks he's got cool ice powers. Tough
to say, but he does do that. And, you know, with
that, the, you know, the film kind of ends and
that's, that's the tale of Asgard that we got
in our first installment of what is. what is
known as the Yoastverse series of animated stuff,
which is kind of a cool thing. This is actually
the first time that I've seen this specific film,
but I've seen a lot of the other ones and a lot
of the TV shows that came from this Earth designation.
But we'll get to that when we get to sort of
some comic book tie -ins and stuff. But in terms
of MCU tie -ins, it's actually more rich with
MCU tie -ins than I would have expected from
an animated film. I made the comment when we
were doing the watch party, I was like, oh, it's
Feige. I didn't realize that he was involved
in this, but he was. And it's very clear that
having these same characters that are in the
first Thor film and everything else, this was
intentional and meant to be part of it. So even
though it actually does have a different Earth
designation as everything else, I think that
it actually... in a quite literal sense, ties
in directly with Thor's story. So we have the
characters, we have the sort of basis of who
they are and where they're coming from and everything
else. And obviously that grows into what we have
later as the first Thor film. So pretty heavy
tie -ins in that sense. Like I said, we do see
Mjolnir, you know, it's already there, even though
he doesn't use it. You know, we do see, yeah,
we do see, you know, I said Odin and, you know,
Thor and Loki and the Warriors Three and Lady
Sif. And even though there's some other things
that, were added in. And as I said, I really
liked, uh, you know, Valkyries being more of
a group of people rather than just a single person.
Um, yeah, that was interesting. Yeah. And everything
else. And, you know, they had the enchantress
that was here, which was pretty neat and cool
to put Fenris Wolf in, even though it wasn't
him. Uh, so it was a little different about that
one. Yeah, it was a little different because
it's interesting, you know, to bring in something.
I mean, and for me, like as a fan of, you know,
Thor's one of the comic books that I've read
probably the most of to have, you know, callbacks
like Toothgrinder and Toothnasher, you know,
like obscure, you know, like that. But they,
you know, those things were so obscure, they
didn't even make it until the fourth installment
of the actual Thor films. We'll get to that as
well. Yeah, they just screamed a lot, which was
dumb. But that whole movie was. Got a dub. We'll
get there. Yeah, we'll get there. But, you know,
lots of good comic tie, or excuse me, lots of
good MCU tie -ins. Yeah, for sure. Just across
the board and really looking forward to seeing
how this Yoastverse continues to do so in the
future, because this is the first installment
of those things in that universe. Speaking of
which, why don't you hit us with some comic book
tie -ins and things like that and talk to us
more about this Yoastverse and this Earth designation.
Yeah, absolutely. And the reality of this universe
is 8096. That is the Yostverse. And we will see
many more iterations therein. And I really look
forward to it. The things that come straight
out of comics, this is actually based pretty
loosely on a story called Thor, Son of Asgard.
That was a 2004 -2005 Marvel Ages series. And
it was written by Akira Yoshida, which is a pseudonym
for C .B. I'm going to mispronounce this and
I apologize, but Sibulski, since he doesn't apologize.
Yeah, but it's a series that follows a teenage
Thor getting across Asgard with Sif and Balder,
which I kind of bummed that Balder has never
actually made his way into the MCU. But obviously
for this. film balder was replaced with the warriors
three which funny enough are the only real three
characters that we see like the core cast of
asgard the only three characters that don't come
from norse mythology so kind of an interesting
fact that they're so prominent when they're kind
of the only piece that that didn't actually come
from there but speaking of them uh they did first
appear in journey into mystery number 119 in
August 1965. So they've been around for quite
a while. Wow. And you can really tell the time
that they were made because Fandral was based
very heavily on Errol Flynn. Hogan based on Charles
Bronson and Volstagg on Shakespeare's Falstaff.
If you look at pictures of these folks, they're
virtually identical. It's pretty funny. But yeah,
beyond that interesting little tidbit. that this
film was actually made in 2009 completed and
copyrighted in 2009 but didn't release until
2011 because the film was supposed to release
first finally algrim he was actually a character
from the comics he is a dark elf that is a loyal
lieutenant of malekith which i'm sure most of
us know especially if we've watched a lot of
the mcu But he's noted for being the largest
and strongest of his kind. So they they took
some liberties with him. Yeah. The guy that was
in this movie. Yeah. Yeah. So the name is certainly
carried over. But I'd say that the character
itself is probably not as far as comics and Easter
eggs and things like that. Obviously, you mentioned
seeing Mjolnir. I think I saw Stormbreaker, but
it clipped away too quickly. Don't take my word
on that. But yeah, it's, it was a fun little
watch. What'd you think of it? Yeah. I mean,
I, you know, and like I said, I mean, I mentioned
kind of in the recap, this sort of universities
and this Yoast first that, that, you know, this
is a part of, I've really enjoyed a lot of those
things already. I said, this is the first time
I've seen this one. And it, you know, it did
disappoint. I mean, it certainly had some sort
of strange, I wouldn't call them flaws, but certainly
some design choices that I might not necessarily
agree with. Yeah. And everything else, it was
interesting. You know, it was jarring to me to
kind of see how the worlds were connected. Yeah,
that was a little weird. You know, Yggdrasil
is supposed to be this, you know, all the realms
are connected via this world tree, but to have
a literal bridge that you can just walk across.
I mean, you know, I don't know. Like, yeah, it
was a little off -putting to a point where, I
mean, you know, for those that were with us during
the watch party. We were genuinely confused at
how they got to the wherever the Valkyries were.
What happened? You know, they were just in Jotunheim
30 seconds ago. Yeah, the ship is broken. Where
the hell are they going to go? You know, so,
you know, that was that was kind of off -putting.
They even showed when they showed the ship sailing
away from Asgard in the beginning that I didn't
see any bridges connecting Asgard anywhere. But
then when the frost giants came, they just walked
right up. No issue. I was just, you know. To
the front gate, too. Yeah, right to the front
gate. Yeah, to the front door. And, you know,
knocked and everyone was like, all right, everybody,
stay in your homes. This is nothing to worry
about until they were all getting blown up. Yeah,
yeah. Keep eating your dinner. So I think to
me, that was the most jarring thing. But I still
like the story. It was cool to kind of see these
characters that, you know, Thor is one of my
favorites, you know, just in general for Marvel.
Yeah. So it's cool to see these characters and,
you know, see a lot of familiar tropes. It was
neat to see Loki as. ultimately just a through
and through good guy here. I mean, he, you know,
dare I say the best of them. in terms of his
decision making and what he was doing up until
that time where he killed that guy. Well, yeah,
there's that. You know, they flippy floppy right
there at the very end, you know, as Thor's like,
you know, having these sort of, this sort of
like cathartic moment with Odin of like, you
know, I did the right, I messed up, but I also,
you know, I was like, good job, son. And Loki's
sitting there pouting. Yeah, Loki's sitting there
pouting after he just wiped away his, you know,
friend of how many ever years. But I mean, he
didn't go immediately evil, just crazily. Which,
you know, and I kind of pride myself on being
able to sort of guess how some of these things
are kind of going, just everything. That took
me by surprise. I was not expecting. Because
there was no groundwork laid forth. There was
no groundwork at all, yeah. I was not expecting
him to be a bad guy, you know, this whole time.
So just immediately just go, screw all you guys,
I'm killing them. But even with those things,
like I said, not necessarily flaws, just design
choices that I wouldn't have done if it was me.
I still think it was a fun watch. You know, I
would like to see Thor do more Thor stuff. But,
you know, I guess that's kind of the point. He's
teenage Thor and, you know, he's not learned
all this stuff yet and everything else. So it's
pretty rudimentary. And we did get to see some
cool stuff with him do with gun gear at the end.
So, yeah, overall, I give it a thumbs up. How
about yourself? It was fun. It was fun. I I have
not watched as much as of the Yost first as you
have. I saw. Hulk versus Wolverine. But I think
that's it. I think that's the only one I've actually
watched. So I wasn't I wasn't as as pumped up
for this, but it was fun. It was stories about
teenagers are always a little annoying, just
just a little bit because they do really stupid
things. And it's, you know, but that's what they
are. So you heard it here for folks. Remy hates
kids. Well, you know. No, no, no. But. It was
a fun watch. I did like seeing Loki prior to
his full evil Loki version. I liked seeing Sif.
I liked the Warriors 3. It was a lot of fun to
see kind of their origins, the origins of their
friendship, as it were. But yeah, it was a fun
adventure. I did not like what they did with
Fenris. It's comforting to me that this is not
the main Marvel universe. because that's i don't
want that venerous and it should not exist in
any universe but at least it's not in ours but
yeah i don't i don't particularly care for that
and i didn't care for the the choice with the
valkyries i thought that was really strange it
was very uh themyscira which is has never really
been their bag but again i don't read a lot of
thor comics so maybe there's something i'm missing
that just or something i do and it was weird
to me as well so yeah i agree okay that was all
right that was a strange choice and very much
you said it right a themyscira thing like they
were very much men bad women good in this area
kind of thing for whatever reason right right
so you know it was despite its flaws it was still
fun the animation was quality enough the the
last battle was rad i really enjoyed that The
way they use the lights and everything like that.
That's an episode that I'm probably going to
put on my big screen and watch again because
of that. All in all, thumbs up. Not the best
thing we've watched to this point, but a lot
of fun regardless. Yeah, worth it. Yeah. That
being said, that's that. And I look forward to
the next one. On to the next. Thank you for joining

Snark Industries takes on Thor: Tales of Asgard, the earliest entry in the Yost verse and the first animated film of the run. The full plot gets walked through, from teenage Thor chafing at staged arena bouts to the stowaway voyage into Jotunheim, the recovery of the Sword of Surtur, the detour through the Valkyries' realm, and Algrim's late turn that puts Odin on his back and Asgard under siege. Comic roots are traced to Thor: Son of Asgard, a 2004 to 2005 Marvel Age series written under the pseudonym Akira Yoshida, with Balder swapped out for the Warriors Three, who first appeared in Journey into Mystery number 119 in August 1965 and were visually modeled on Errol Flynn, Charles Bronson, and Shakespeare's Falstaff. Algrim gets his own breakdown as a dark elf lieutenant of Malekith in the comics, notably reworked here. Personal thoughts land as a qualified thumbs up on both sides, with shared enthusiasm for the final battle's use of light and shared confusion over the walkable bridges between realms, this version of Fenris, and a Valkyrie order that feels imported from a different mythology entirely.

Synopsis
A boastful young prince Thor, who has never left the royal grounds wins every arena match, then learns from his own father that the celebrated warriors were ordered to let him win, that the kingdom cannot be seen to watch its heir lose. Stung, and forbidden to ride out, he clutches to a rumor his brother, Loki, plants: a rite-of-passage quest for a fire blade forged by the lord of the flame realm, Surtur, buried in the ice. He and his brother stow away aboard a warship supposedly bound for the frozen realm. The Warriors Three, who tell far more stories of war than they have fought, are coerced by Thor and Loki to strike out to find the weapon that will make him, at last, a warrior in his and his father's eyes. What he does not know is that the family's trusted advisor, the last of a people the ice giants wiped out, has been waiting a lifetime for exactly this weapon to surface.
Successfully finding the fabled weapon, the theft sparks a war they never imagined. Frost Giant blood is spilled in the frozen realm, an old truce shatters, and the giants march on the golden kingdom with a grievance that is, in all fairness, earned. Traveling across the world tree to the home of the Valkyries, he nearly convinces Lady Sif to assist them in their journey when he is captured by the warrior women. The Frost Giants foolishly storm the Valkyrie camp only to be defeated. Thor and company are set free to right things. On path back to Asgard, Thor and company encounter Algrim and the search party sent to retrieve them. The betrayal comes from the one direction he trusted: the old advisor takes the sword to avenge a people that Asgard let die. He turns it on the Allfather himself, nearly ending him. Thor finally becomes the warrior he so desired and defeats Algrim. He chooses to spare the Dark Elf for the years of friendship. Loki, however, does not. He kills Algrim with the Sword of Surtur. Thor, sword in hand, rides out to the Giants and offers it and himself willingly, becoming the hero of legend. Mercy is shown by King Thrym of the Frost Giants and Thor returns home to an unusual kind word from his father.

Comic Roots
Where the episode's people and places come from on the page.
"Tales of Asgard" was the name of the backup strip that ran in Journey into Mystery beginning with issue #97 (1963), by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby, devoted to Thor's mythological Asgardian adventures rather than his Earth-bound superheroics. That feature is where much of the supporting cast originated, which is why the film's ensemble is drawn almost entirely from it. The film adapts no single Tales of Asgard story; it borrows the banner. Per the film's own making-of featurette, the closer structural inspiration is the 2004-2005 Marvel Age series Thor: Son of Asgard by Akira Yoshida (a pseudonym for C.B. Cebulski) and Greg Tocchini, a teenage-Thor quest across Asgard, though the film swaps that book's Balder for the Warriors Three.
The film's most significant adaptation choice concerns Algrim the Dark Elf. In the comics, Algrim the Strong is coerced by Malekith the Accursed into fighting Thor, is betrayed and left to die in lava, and returns as the monster Kurse, ultimately becoming loyal to Asgard and even killing Malekith. This film discards that arc entirely. Here Algrim is the last surviving Dark Elf, made Odin's trusted advisor and Thor's mentor, who nurses a lifetime of resentment: Odin refused to help Svartalfheim against the Frost Giants, the Dark Elves turned to Surtur in desperation, and after Odin killed Surtur the giants exterminated the elves. Algrim's turn against Asgard for the Sword of Surtur is a wholesale reinvention, sympathetic in motive, villainous in act, with none of the Malekith or Kurse material present.
Surtur appears only in a flashback (Odin's defeat of him with the spear Gungnir), the event that lost the sword in the mountain. The blade itself, called Elderstahl by the dwarves, is the film's version of the Sword of Surtur / Twilight Sword. Amora appears as a young Enchantress and Loki's fellow magic student, a teenage take on the future Asgardian sorceress who debuted in Journey into Mystery #103 (1964). The Warriors Three (Fandral, Hogun, Volstagg) first appeared in Journey into Mystery #119 (August 1965), Marvel originals modeled respectively on Errol Flynn, Charles Bronson, and Shakespeare's Falstaff; Sif predates them, from Journey into Mystery #102 (1964).

The Film Opens and Closes on The Same Tall Tale
Fandral spins an ever-inflating tavern story to Sif in both the opening and the finale, the beast count climbing from "seven, ten, at least a dozen" to "fifty" by the end. A fun little bookend.
The Sword is Named Elderstahl
Thor tells the group the dwarves called the blade "Elderstahl" (Elder Steel), and that it magically resizes to fit whoever wields it, shrinking to Thor's grip when he touches it. The name is the film's own for the Sword of Surtur.
The Valkyries Are an Anti-Asgard Sisterhood
Brunnhilde's Valkyries at Kona Lifandi are former maidens who have severed ties with men and Odin's rule to train for independence; Sif joins them. The camp's swimming-pool sequence is a direct nod to the sort of Amazon staging seen in Wonder Woman adaptations.
