Synopsis

After Cat's revelation, over a free diner pie, a rarity in Depression era New York, Ben finally tells Cat how The Spider came to be. The memory takes him back to the last days of the Great War, to a German prison camp his unit was sent to liberate. Inside, he and his men free Flint Marko, Jimmy Addison, Lonnie Lincoln, and a host of others. Deeper in the compound they find something far worse: prisoners strapped to beds, bound by tubes to jarred animals.. their bodies twisting into something no longer human. One man, a Man-Spider if you will, sinks his fangs into Ben's arm before his fellow soldiers are able to put him down. Obviously, Ben survived the bite and has carried what it did to him ever since. He admits that the only reason he took Cat's case at all was the hope of finding a way to give the power back.

In the present, every thread pulls tight at once. Robbie forces his way back onto the Daily Bugle's payroll with his account and continued pursuit of the powered men. As he interviews Dr. Alethea Faber and her assistant, Ogden, Ben slips into her office and steals files that lay bare a grim truth: Faber meant to heal these veterans. Her treatments are, however, what awoke the mutations now killing them. Ben and Cat decide to run away together. Leave everything behind and go to Santorini. Cat meets with Flint, presumably to say her farewells. While there, she speaks with Lonnie and discovers that Dr. Faber needs only to know who the Spider is to save Flint’s life. Later, Flint and Lonnie Lincoln tear open a police station to free the electric Dirk Leyden, whom Silvermane folds into his growing coalition. Silvermane, with his new band of villains, invites Ben for a chat, “asking” him to warn the Spider away from his war with Mayor Morris. Desperate to save the dying Flint, Cat makes a ruinous choice. She goes to Faber, secures a promise that the Spider will not be harmed, and surrenders the one secret Ben trusted her with: that he is the man behind the mask.

Comic Roots

Where the episode's people and places come from on the page.

The Spider Bite

The defining beat of every Spider-Man origin is the bite. Peter Parker is bitten by a radioactive spider in Amazing Fantasy #15 (1962) by Stan Lee and Steve Ditko, a clean and almost accidental piece of science fiction. The series keeps the bite and strips away the cleanliness: Ben's power comes from a man surgically and chemically twisted into a spider, who sinks his fangs into Ben before dying. The foundational event is intact while its tone is dragged from pulp sci-fi into outright body horror.

The Scientist Whosse Cure Becomes a Curse

Dr. Alethea Faber, a healer whose treatments mutate and slowly kill her patients, sits in a long Spider-Man tradition of well-meaning science gone monstrous. Dr. Morbius, Dr. Octavius, and, honestly, many more. The clearest comics ancestor, we think, is Curt Connors, the Lizard, introduced in The Amazing Spider-Man #6 (1963), a doctor whose attempt to regrow a lost limb transforms him into a reptile. The ward of men fused with mantis, snake, and.. lizard? Makes that lineage almost literal.

The Wish to be Rid of the Power

Ben's confession that he took the case hoping to give his abilities back echoes one of Peter Parker's most human recurring impulses, the desire to simply be normal. The most famous version is the Six Arms Saga in The Amazing Spider-Man #100 to #102 (1971), where Peter brews a serum to cure himself of his powers and instead sprouts four extra arms. Ironically, creating something akin to what bites Ben in this episode. The series gives that yearning to a man who has spent fifteen years wanting his curse undone.

The Snark File

Easter eggs, callbacks and technical tidbits.

A Ward Straight Out of Doctor Moreau

The prisoners fused with a praying mantis, a snake, a spider, and many other disturbing combinations place the show's body horror in the lineage of H.G. Wells's The Island of Doctor Moreau, about a man named man (the titular Dr. Moreau) performing agonizing vivisection experiments to transform wild animals into unstable, human-like hybrids. Truly disturbing.
